Thread: Louisiana Logos

I just don't think getting rid of the pepper is equivalent in any way shape or form to us adopting either tigers or bulldogs. He's only been around for ~10 years.....was not very well received from the beginning, and that continues to this day. Sorry. I just think we can and should do better.

You know that Cayenne is a NYC produced mascot. We paid $30k for him and the hot wheel logo. This Cayenne is revised because the original looked like a red dildo.

It's not like this is a century old mascot. Probably less than 20 years ago this happened

Exactly: about as far away from a hallowed, time honored tradition as you can get, lol. Per Wikipedia, he was introduced in 2000.....so that's just 15 years ago, for you ltur stalkers, lol.

How many times are we going to keep re-branding ourselves, and then _____ when each branding doesn't catch on?

We are UL. We have some ESPN announcers referring to us as UL. The reference to us as "L" would sound dumb on the TV/radio, and the people in front the mic would rather say two syllables for "UL" than constantly five for "Louisiana".

Also, except for people wanting to be jackasses and pretend otherwise, when you say "UL" in the state of Louisiana, just about anyone who slightly pays attention knows you are referring to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (our official name).

The branding has already been a cluster-frick due to the leaders moving the ball. No more. We've been pushing the UL and Louisiana branding. We stick with that.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not sure who is recommending that we ditch either UL or Louisiana? Adding the letter 'L' just reinforces the Louisiana thing. And just because we change the mascot from a pepper to an alligator doesn't really impact our 'brand' very much at all, IMO.

Florida beat us to the gator. Let's move on.
Spurrier adopting Swamp after scheduling Louisiana hasn't slowed Florida one bit.

Some self esteem helps when incorporating a legit bit.

Louisiana will get tons of free legitimacy pub with the BullGator.

I don't blame Florida, their mascot was homeless.

Louisiana has always had the home, some insist on maintaining a vacancy.

No to the "L". It resolves nothing with our identity issue... but adds to the problem. And as for Cayenne... get rid of it. Anything big and fuzzy is fine for kids... so their liking of Cayenne is irrelevant. They'll like whatever next big fuzzy creature we come up with. As much as I'm hesitant to go with a Red Gator... it's infinitely better than Cayenne. I'm not concerned about being called "the gators". It will never stick. It just isn't insulting enough... like the "flaming vegetable" is right now. Ragin Cajuns is our greatest idea... ever... and it is taking us places.

But again... the "L" isn't going to do one thing for us but create more issues. "Louisiana" and "UL" are the only athletic nicknames/apparel logo'ing we should stick with.

    That is correct, 1999

I have a document from 1999 where a UL marketing official lamented or compared the upcoming adoption of the pepper with having to do penance.

The introduction may have been 2000.

First, I want to thank you for your civil tone. We are far more likely to affect each other's thinking through civil discourse!

That said, where we more accurately disagree is on whether forfeiting the unique perception we have in college football. You can see the trouble we have already with people confusing us with ULM and Lafayette College. That is only going to get worse if we copy one of the most well known brands in sports. Do you think it would be long before fans start doing the UF alligator chomp? This is the point I was trying to make with the Tigers and Bulldogs remark. Copying someone else's well staked-out ground is not good policy. It won't help us grow or appeal to new fans. All it is going to do is diminish the perception of our beloved school. Sorry, I can't go along with that.
