Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team was able to keep it close against Denver more than midway through the second half before ultimately falling, 66-75, at Earl K. Long Gym on Wednesday evening.
The Cajuns now sit a 6-11 on the season and 1-4 in the Sun Belt. The Pioneers are 11-6 on the year with a 6-1 record in the league.
The Cajuns held Denver scoreless in the opening minutes, grabbing an early 4-0 lead. After missing their first six field goal attempts, the Pioneers hit their first field goal at the 15:48 mark. DU would then put together a 9-0 run to grab a 9-4 lead.
Denver would stretch the lead to 12-5, but back-to-back three-pointers by Alexis Green would draw the Cajuns to within one point, 13-14, with 11:20 remaining in the half.
A jumper by Josie West would allow the Cajuns to retake the lead and a lay-up by Jasmine Barnes would give UL a 17-14 advantage with 8:10 remaining.
A strong defensive effort helped the Cajuns in their 12-2 run, holding DU scoreless for more than four minutes.
The Pioneers would retake the lead with 7:14 remaining and hold off the Cajuns to take a 31-26 lead into the break.
The Cajuns opened the second half and put together a successful run 12-6 run to grab a 38-37 lead at the 14:55 mark.
But the Pioneers would not stay down for long, retaking the lead and build it to an 11-point advantage. The Cajuns would find themselves trailing 46-57 with 6:17 remaining.
Denver would maintain at least an eight-point lead the remainder of the half.
Green led UL with a season-high 26 points, including a 4-for-8 performance from the three-point line. Mercedes Johnson finished with nine points and six boards.
The Cajuns shot nearly 42 percent on the night (26-62) but Denver was able to knock down nearly 52 percent (27-52). The battle of the boards was close with DU grabbing a 33-30 advantage.
The Cajuns will take to the road this weekend, taking on UALR on Saturday in Little Rock, Ark. Tip off is set for 4:30 p.m. CT.
