I tend to be on the pessimistic view of things but I look at it like this. Our high school signees would have loved big $$ like anyone else but they care more about honing their skill sets and being a Ragin Cajun. They view UL as a great opportunity and only big $$$ would have swayed them. They clearly were not viewed as an easy sign on a contract therefore their stock dropped. Win Win for them and US

These guys must really want to be Ragin' Cajuns for them to give the impression they weren't going pro at almost any price.

For teams to lay off, these guys either aren't as good as our coaches thought (which is almost certainly not the case), or teams knew they were wasting a pick on somebody who wasn't coming to play for them.

From a purely Ragin' Cajuns point of view, I'm stoked about this.

Granted, I never cheer against a guy's future. And you never know if that 38th round pick is the highest you'll ever get drafted. Many, many, may high school draftees never see the draft again once they go to college.

But I'm sure many high schoolers end their careers in A ball before they ever get off the ground.

It's like Deal or No Deal. Do you take the cash, or keep playing? There's $1 million plus still on the board. But you could walk away with nothing.

Here's my take on this, if anybody is interested.

Coaches spend most of their time recruiting players they have a good shot at landing. It doesn't make sense to go hard after a guy who will likely be a first-rounder, because the odds of him making it to school are slim when looking at the millions they'd command. Some of those are early round talents who set a high dollar number for themselves (such as Nick Lee), others are lesser known ball players with potential (Blake Trahan, anybody?). A kid usually has a minimum signing bonus figure that must be met if they are to be persuaded away from college, which might be why some of these guys weren't drafted. I don't know Lee's number officially, but let's say it was somewhere around $500K. A team would've had to snag him in the fourth round or draft a couple college seniors ahead of him who don't have much bargaining power when it comes to negotiating their signing bonuses.

All the slot value provides is a baseline to determine how much money a team has in its pool to sign their draft picks. Some teams will draft a college senior in the higher rounds and sign him below slot to free up some dough for guys like Nick Lee who they snag up at lower rounds.

Where it gets tricky is past the 10th round. There, anything over $100K eats directly into the bonus money allotted for the picks in the first 10 rounds. I don't think it's likely you'll see guys like Lee or Harris or Sensley sign to play professionally after being picked tomorrow (all three likely to be drafted at some point) because a team would have to pony up money it needs to use to sign those top 10 picks, and based on what those three would likely command, it would eat a significant chunk of that money.

If a big league club drafts a guy in the first eight rounds or so, they have at least some confidence that they can sway a guy to sign professionally.

This is all, of course, my understanding of this. I'm fairly new to the MLB draft game myself, so if someone sees any inconsistencies, point them out.

A friend's son was drafted a few years ago and got $150K. He got two checks, half when he signed, and the other half three months later. His CPA averaged his income over three years to minimize taxes.

Well, there is definately a chance. If he would have been healthy all year I think he would get taken higher. He is coming off labrum surgery... I think coming back and playing a full healthy year will raise his draft stock. The way things are looking right now... We are already set uo for another run next year. It's looking more and more like his buddy sensley will make it here. I just have a feeling we keep everyone and all signed will be on campus. We should start preseason top 25 and if we stay healthy should at least be setup to potentially host a regional.

It's pretty obvious to me that Lee, Harris and Ray all gave MLB teams bigger numbers than they were willing to pay. I won't be surprised now if all three go undrafted.

I'm still concerned about Sensley.
