I've never heard the "upstart" term used for a team like ours or VCU who have been D1 for over 40 years and are having a good tourney run. Maybe a mid-major or lower seed "on a roll" or "hot".
Upstart is a team that has only been in existence in D1 for a few seasons that is finding some recent success. Like RC10 said, HBU can be considered that. I would never consider the term "upstart" applicable to us unless you were trying to insult.
That's why I said according to the definition...and if you are speaking only in this season... Even more so the last month, it's not incorrect. It's not a term I would use but Im not trying to insult us. We were 5-5 in our last 10 heading into tourney with a series loss against worst team in the conference.
I think maybe we should give this topic a rest!
He's not speaking of the season. He's talking about the program and school as a whole.
"A big state school never wants to play a smaller, upstart one with so much at stake. With Omaha on the line, Big State University does not want to deal with all the hate from Want To Be State U."
