If someone truly "trashes" a particular student-athlete... the entire forum will blow up in their face. But making comments about the performance of athletes is not a big deal. Defending the athlete is not a big deal. Saying that you prefer sticking with the coach is not a big deal. I don't even think two people getting hostile toward each other is a big deal. A big deal is Sam hitting the game ending walk-off home run. I believe she defended herself with the bat... and wrote the ending to this "debate".
That said... I do think the most sensitive issue on RP is probably the extent to which we discuss the student-athletes themselves. I think, as sports forums go, we are the best in class. I believe we self-police fairly well. Again, personally, I think we should be able to discuss their play... and give opinions. And again, I think you can expect someone to eventually say, "I'll go by what coach says and does". It's a given. But as for describing athlete play and it not always being complimentary... it will be said... it will be defended... it's a sports forum. Only the over-sensitive need to choose a different past time.
