Lady Cajuns Win In Program's 1,000th Game
The University of Louisiana Lady Cajuns put together a complete performance on Saturday in Savannah, Ga., shutting down Savannah State with a 53-35 win in the women's basketball program's 1,000th game. The Cajuns' all-time record is 357-643.
With the win the Cajuns are 6-10 overall this year, doubling the win total from last season. Savannah State sits a 8-12 on the year.
The Cajuns struggled in the opening minutes falling behind the Tigers 6-1 at the 14:32 mark. But UL would put together a 17-0 run to claim the lead for good with 8:50 remaining in the first half at 18-6. Mercedes Johnson scored 13 points for the Cajuns during the run. At the break, UL would hold a 26-18 advantage.
The Cajuns would score to open the second half pushing the lead to double digits. The lead would grow to as much as 20 points and the Tigers could not crack the Cajuns double-digit lead.
UL dominated the inside game scoring 30 points in the paint. The defense also played a big role, forcing 21 turnovers which lead to 18 points for the Cajuns. UL held the Tigers to 25.5 percent shooting (14-55) on the afternoon while knocking down 38.9 percent of their own (21-54).
The Lady Cajuns outrebounded Savannah State 44-32 and recorded season highs for steals (14) and assists (17).
Johnson led the Cajuns with 17 points, seven rebounds and a career-high six steals. Jasmine Barnes chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Nicole Morris scored seven points with six rebounds and four assists.
The Lady Cajuns will return to league play on Wednesday, Jan. 13 against Denver at Earl K. Long Gym. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.
