Is it just me but it is amazing that the ULL Mens team played great defense tonight, ran the floor and did not take the usual 30-3 pointers and they WON the game.
On that same note let me say good job. You gave us a few minutes of fear at the end of the game but you showed us what we have been looking for HEART, DETERMINATION AND THE DESIRE TO WIN.
Good job cajuns lets keep the same mentality going into the game Thursday at Denver.
Looks like coach may have found himself a point guard after all. LOL
What I liked was the gameplan on defense to face guard Tristan Thompson with Andrews and Bureau and to hound Josh White and get in his face on the perimeter. White is going to beat you on the dribble as he's very quick and strong with the ball but frustrated him all game. Thompson didn't hit double figures until late in the second half. We still struggled to rebound effectively as usual and allowed to many 6'4" guys to continuously get offensive putbacks. We also made a committment to get the ball to Gradnigo and Johnson in the post and off of screens getting both easy shots which they made and that allowed us to get the early lead. I thought coach Lee's gameplan was effective and well planned. The funny thing is that as much grief that Lee gets for strategic problems, I think a part of blame should be laid upon the players. They were running Thompson off of a curl screen in the second half continuously due to the face guarding and the screener's defender continuously did nothing to step out and stop him from curling to the basket time and time again. Roberson was guilty of this at least 3 times and each time, Lee would plead with him to stop the curl and Roberson never did anything differently to stop it. I tend to think that many of the things that coach Lee is criticized for are taught and stressed but some of the players just don't execute for whatever reason.
I agree. Lee tries. I think on of the best decisions he made was to go with the freshman at point guard. He has impressed me with his play so far. I had watched him in on the internet in the two away games. He really has a swagger to him for a freshman. I also saw something interesting in the game. There were several times when he was on the floor when he got the rest of the team together and talked to them. He appeared to always look to Lee for instruction then delivered it to the team. In other words he is actually a point guard. He got out of control once but all in all he played a very good game. He defended Thompson very well as he did with Slaughter of WKU. Thompson had one layup the entire game all his other points were free throws.
I also agree about the rebounding. I am at a loss for how our kids are so bad (except for Johnson) at judging the ball off the rim. They try to play vollyball with it. Just block out, jump when the ball is on the way down and get your hands on it. We really have some guys with "BAD" hands. Lets get some tennis balls, ping pong balls and do some real reabounding drils. LOL
Hopefully the team will realized now they can win in the Sun Belt.
