I'm not getting into your debate with Boomer but I will mention that we are not outmanning or out-athleting anybody in the SBC. We may be on par with teams in terms of the athletes we have in our program but we are not superior in that regard to the other top teams in our conference.

IMO, there is little to no chance that somebody other than Haack goes into the season as the starter. I think the entire team and coaching staff knows this without having to actually come out with a press release to say it. I also think that some overstate the offensive playbook and concerns about changing it for Haack's style. We run a spread attack from the pistol and I don't think that will change much, if at all. You obviously won't see as much QB option stuff although I still think it will be a part of the offense but I would imagine possibly more 2 back sets, jet screens and rollouts. Its a simple tweaking of the offense without having to "change" anything really.

Really? We can play as vanilla as a vanilla bean and still beat everyone not named Appalachian State? So how did we manage that, if we aren't out manning them and come with a ya-ya predictable playbook? I think you are underselling the level of athlete we have had here these past couple years.

Having good players is not necessarily having a superior level of athlete over the rest of our league. We've gotten our asses handed to us by the likes of USA, App State, Ark State, WKU etc over recent years not to mention a loss to ULM. We've also barely escaped teams like Ga State with narrow wins. To me, this notion is stating that teams can not compete with you across the board athletically and that is not the case. While we have improved our recruiting efforts and brought in much bigger and faster athletes, we are not necessarily above many of the top level teams in this conference.

We simply did not show up against USA… App State punched us in the mouth repeatedly last year… Arkansas State had a very similar level of athletes under the tutelage of Freeze and Malzahn, and WKU recruits well as well… Arkansas State seems to keep up with us in recruiting, but outside of them on a regular basis (these past 4-5 years under HUD) I firmly believe our level of athlete trumps all other Sun Belt schools by a pretty wide margin. It doesn't mean you won't play horribly and lose to an inferior team when you do, but when both teams are playing well, we out athlete everyone in the Sun Belt not named Arkansas State IMO

Not anyone? Ok... We outman just about everyone on the lines, which is where it matters most. You don't hold the ball for 40 minutes over and over if you aren't bigger upfront. When we have gotten whipped, it's because we were outsmarted/executed or didn't show up... It's not because the guys across from us were bigger and stronger.

Understood and it works both ways. By having that superior level of athlete to the other schools, you could say that this could save you on those days you don't show up or play your best also. If our level of talent was that much better than App State, couldn't it be argued that although we didn't play well, we should have won with physical matchups alone. We consistently recruit against other SBC teams for athletes and we win some but we also lose some. Again, I think our level of recruiting has increased as you mentioned but we are not head and shoulders above the other top teams in our conference in that regard.

So, what about across the board? what about all positions. We don't dominate anybody. Our defensive statistics would support that. While we have been able to bring a physical running game to the table which is not debatable, we are not physically superior to many of the teams in our league across the board.

Does haack play defense? I have been talking offense this entire thread, we will not out athlete power 5 OOC teams with a zone read. They have DE that are as fast as our QB's and RB's. Being bigger up front has gotten us every where we have been in the sunbelt under Hud. People stack 10 in the box and we still run it. You will not do that against bigger, faster defenses. Like I said earlier, if we want to have the big wins.. We have to be able to execute every facet of an offense. You aren't gonna win the big games being one dimensional. We have been one dimensional but successful in conference play because we are... For the most part, bigger, stronger faster and in better shape than most of the sunbelt.

IMO Hud has his quarterback and maybe quarterbacks. Unlike LTU R he did not look for transfers.

He has the receivers for a sharp armed quarterback. That is Haack. The jobs his to lose. It will be fluid early.

man you get 10 off against 11 def with your passing type QB---If he is a runner it evens out to 11 against 11---but with the read option you get really 11 offensive to the defense's 10

added to this is an extra blocker at the point of attack

So the question might not be so much of a QB ability one as much as a QB running what scheme one is

I doubt that anybody on here thinks that Haack is a better read option QB than Nixon, Davis, or Ray

Sometimes there is like so many things discussed on this board a far deeper explanation!!!

Boomer...no NFL team runs the read option more than 5 to 10%.....

That's right boomer...like the fact that a QB that can read progressions from boundary to boundary will keep the safeties out of the box and open up running lanes....
