An Evansville Retrospective - 1977

I was a sophomore at USL in 1977. If you are a basketball fan, you probably remember the headlines; Plane carrying basketball team crashes.
I thought this would give some perspective of who is Evansville.

We played Evansville in the 1971 NCAA Division 2 semi finals. That final tournament was in effect a road game as it was played in Evansville. Still they had to be good then to beat the legendary USL team of Bo Lamar, Roy Ebron, and Fred Saunders. We went D1 the following year and those guys continued their legend the next two seasons.

We played Evansville in the 1971 NCAA Division 2 semi finals. That final tournament was in effect a road game as it was played in Evansville. The first year D1 existed, UL was there.

We lost to Oklahoma Baptist in second round of NAIA tournament in 1965.

McNeese and Grambling were previous small college champions of the NAIA.

This was before the big time with Lamar & Co.

Well do you know which team it was that had a black player---Our president or higher up was not going to let us go to the Tourney because of the Black players and we marched on his home which was then off campus!!!

When the Chairman of the Board of Education (Whetstone) heard that USL was going to participate in the NAIA tournament with teams that had black players, he called the President of USL and told him that USL could not play in a tournament because of a state rule that prohibited it ... it was not just one particular school.

After student protest, USL President called Chairman Whetstone and told him that he would take personal responsibility for the team playing in the tournament.

USL went to NAIA Championships and lost in second round.

----As I have posted, Sure hope the promotion gets better---I know of nothing planned so far----to make matters worse for me, I won't be there---Dear friend's party that will be the last with 3 months to live!!! Duty calls!!!
