We played in this tournament after winning 15 games several years ago. Your comparison is not even close.
    This is a different arguement.

You have only discussed dollars and cents in the university's pocket. You, not me, said we should not participate in any postseason that doesn't bring home the bacon. And I showed you proof that the NO Bowl did not make UL any money.

Edit: Should note that I'm not trying to take away from the fball team and beating a good Nevada team. Strictly discussing finances

I discussed both, value and money. You brought up the bowl which is earned. I call that a poor comparison. Again, if Coach Marlin wants to play the game fine. But there is no argument in that it brings little value or prestige to your program.

Happy not being able to argue the injustice because we truly don't have that argument.

So clearly they are using lots more smoke and mirrors to take care of the P5. But we still suck, SFAustin 2nd year in a row 12 seed. Actually that is what I asked we reach. Nobody said 12 Ain't good enough to get in.

We lost our semi. Looked awful doing it. Nice try to cover up our monumental fail.

So what you saying. See,see let's be bad in a bad conference beause it is all the same in the end. Guess what? In the end it is a futil trip for all but one.

By all means let's not pull an LTU R.

Oh, wait. Seems it really didn't hurt them. They keel hulled us last year.

If your resume consist of anything other then NCAA or NIT post season appearances, then you are selling mediocrity.

    I understand.

I just feel that as long as a few NCAA appearances are sprinkled in, recruits are not going to nit pick post season appearances.

Neither will opponent recruiters if they can't make the same claim. Or I should say they will remain silent on the issue, if they can't toute consecutive NCAA appearances of their own.

How many CIT banners are hanging in the Cajundome or the coaches offices?

    I've never seen any.

These are athletes - they want to compete and having one more goal to go after this season could be a big deal to them and the coaching staff. I also agree with Turbine about it being a potential resume builder and recruiting tool. Additionally - there are people here that enjoy watching and listening to our team play. So I personally am very happy I have at least one more game to listen to.
Doc, we can agree to disagree on this this discussion. But to say someone is simple minded because they don't agree with your opinion is nonsense at best. Let your arguments stand the test and let's see how it plays out. I'm not a person that comes to Ragin Pagin to complain after every loss of a game on a daily basis; I didn't complain about baseball losing yesterday or the basketball team losing Sunday or the WBB team losing Saturday. I simply don't live daily on wins or losses, but I certainly don't believe in sugarcoating things so that others can sleep better at night.

So, tell me what athletes would not want to play another game after the way their last game ended? Of course they would like the opportunity to redeem themselves and show that they are better than what they showed in New Orleans. But that is not a reason to play the game. Does football get to play another game if they don't qualify for a bowl? How about softball and baseball, do they get to play in a regional if they don't qualify? UL didn't get an NCAA or NIT invitation because we didn't earn it. The CIT is simply a tournament that is willing to take programs that didn't qualify for either. There were a number of programs that turned them down because they have higher goals and see no value in it. So they are all simple minded as well.

You stated it's a potential resume or recruiting tool. That is your opinion, but I don't see a long list of potential quality prospects interested in playing for this program over others that have made more than one NCAA or NIT tournament in recent years. And playing in the CIT is not going to change it. Most high school athletes don't even know or care about the CIT.

You also stated there are fans that enjoy watching or listening to our team play. I don't doubt that, but is that another reason to play a game in the CIT? And that may be the case this time around, but it wasn't the case when the Cajuns played Rice the last time in the CIT. Only 1,200 tickets were sold, so apparently there aren't as many interested in watching it as you suggested.
I concede that there is value in the extra practices to help the team next season. But there is just as much a risk in hurting your program's image losing another game to a SLC program and new transition program. That can, or will only hurt your program in recruiting.

There are a number of coaches and programs that didn't see the value in playing in the CIT. They have higher goals for their programs. So you can add me to that group of coaches and programs, but I'm willing to bet that they have more knowledge about the value of playing in the CIT then those calling others simple minded on this forum.

    T you make valid points.

    Except one.

When you are sitting home unpacking your locker there is no such thing as "higher goals."

    Play Ball

---I think there was a year of hell that they went through after turning the Bowl down and if you think that helped recruiting you are crazy!!! It was used against them by all!!!

    T,

You make some valid points. My only rebuttal would be the following:

    1) I agree it will not help recruiting to play in this tournament, however, playing in this tournament cannot hurt the program recruiting wise. I do not think any potential recruit can look at this as a negative.

    2) While I fully understand we lost to 3 SLC schools this year (which I 100% agree is not acceptable), playing the game and losing it is different than being nervous to even lace our shoes up. If we're now scared of losing to an SLC team, we've got bigger problems than playing in this tournament.

Firstly, you are the one who started using "simple minded". I simply played on your own choice of words. But FWIW, i'm not saying YOU are simple minded, just that I think your conclusion about the CIT was not based on factors that I think are important to consider.

I haven't heard anyone claim this was some sort of major accomplishment. Maybe I missed a post or two. I think most of us can agree this is a far cry from the NCAA or NIT. But to NOT play cuz you're worried about losing??? That is NOT a way to approach sports my friend. You play to WIN, not to not lose.

So I think you're right - we have to agree to disagree on this issue. That is fine.

And no one is really talking about this but who's to say we can't go deep into or even win this tournament?
