Thread: Custodial Service Changes at UL

  1. Louisiana Campus Custodial Service Changes at UL

UL - Administrators at the University of Louisiana received approval from the state Civil Service Commission today to outsource its custodial services to a private company. Currently, custodial services are handled through the university's Physical Plant.

According to UL President Dr. Joseph Savoie, the move is expected to money for the university. "This is one of several strategies we are implementing as cost-saving measures for the university during these difficult times. Outsourcing custodial services will allow us to continue providing a high quality of service while protecting the core mission of the university," he said.

The university’s custodial department had 80 employees, but only 49 of those were permanent civil service employees.

The company will take on the 49 permanent employees who will have the option to retain their civil service status, LeBlanc said.

As a provision of the contract, the remaining employees will have the first right to refuse a job offer from GCA if the company decides to increase its staffing level above 49, LeBlanc explained.

Very good move. Absolutely no reason why the university should be in the janitorial business. Privatization makes enormous good sense. Its unfortunate that the private company will be saddled with a bunch of civil service employees. The only negative is the possibiltity of corruption in awarding the contract (a very real concern). But, generally speaking, I am in favor of privatizing as many of this sideline functions as possible.
