Louisiana's women's basketball team put together a 22-4 run to start the second half, grabbing a double-digit lead over McNeese en route to an 82-68 win on Wednesday at Burton Coliseum. The Lady Cajuns had three players score in double figures.
With the win the LAdy Cajuns improved to 2-4 on the year.
Both teams went back and forth, trading points throughout the first half with McNeese grabbing a 27-26 lead. Neither team could secure the lead as the score was tied 10 times with nine lead changes. The Cowgirls' largest lead of the first frame was four points at the 17:19 mark. UL was never able to get out in front by more than two points at any time during the half.
The Cajuns were able to keep it close by scoring 18 points in the paint and getting 11 points from their bench during the first 20 minutes.
UL jumped out in front early in the second half to lead 48-31 at the 11:51 mark, after putting together a 22-4 run. At one point during the run, the Cajuns scored 12 unanswered points.
UL was able to build a 22-point lead late in the half and coasted to an 82-68 win. The Cajuns shot an impressive 62.5 percent in the second half (15-24), scoring 56 points. They also knocked down shots at the free throw line, hitting 31-of-37 for the game.
A strong defensive effort also proved vital as UL forced McNeese into 29 turnovers, despite being out rebounded by the Cowgirls, 33-40.
Mercedes Johnson led UL with 20 points. Amy Richard scored a career-high 12 points and Jasmine Barnes chipped in another 11 points and led the Cajuns with eight rebounds.
Kendra Wells led the Cowgirls with 21 points.
The Cowgirls spent most of the game in foul trouble with three players fouling out._
The Cajuns will face another instate rival on Saturday. UL will travel to Hammond, La. to take on Southeastern Louisiana at 3 p.m. CT for the first of two games against the Lions. The two teams will face off again the following weekend, Dec. 12, at the Cajundome at 3:15 p.m. CT.
