Interesting tidbit: My sources say that Troy turned down a proposed spot in the EagleBank Bowl against UCLA.

Parrott, what bowl would they be turning down? I really can't see this happening, but you are in the know more than we are.

It's too early to know which bowl would be open if the MAC has one team staying home. The Cajuns aren't in the mix for NO. That's down to Troy and Middle. It's looking like Middle will be in NO. Troy's other top option is the GMAC Bowl, but the EagleBank was considered and others might come up depending on what happens this weekend. Middle is also looking at GMAC, EagleBank, Little Caesars Pizza and Humanitarian with outside shot at St Pete (really outside). The Cajuns would have to take whatever is left. Could be GMAC, LC Pizza, EagleBank, International, etc.

Just remember that none of this matters if Hawaii and Army win their final games. Hawaii would go to Hawaii Bowl, Army to EagleBank. (Notre Dame wants to play in EagleBank if Arky is out but only against a power conference team otherwise it's a no go.)

What is the rule for Troy to turn down the N.O. bowl and accept another? I thought someone said that for that to happen the SBC would have to replace Troy with a 7+ win team. So does that mean if Troy opts out Mid Tenn will be in N.O., or does UL stand a chance?

    CHeck this out:
Here is a quote from R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl executive director Billy Ferrante on how the bowl selection is playing out. This was sent to me by Sun Belt Conference associate commissioner John McElwain recently. I believe this should clear up anything that implies the Sun Belt is the one placing teams in bowls.
“The agreement in place with the Sun Belt Conference states that the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl has the first choice of Sun Belt Conference teams should the league’s champion have an offer outside of our game,” said R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Executive Director Billy Ferrante.
“We are waiting to make our selection due to the fact that there are multiple bowl eligible teams from the Sun Belt Conference and there may be additional opportunities for these teams. Bowl game administrators across the country are using the next several days to analyze the teams that will help strengthen their game the most. We are in the process of evaluating what certain teams will mean for our attendance, television ratings, quality of competition and bowl atmosphere.”
MT Thinks that this means that they are in if Troy ops out, but I don't know?
What if MT gets a bid for a closer Bowl and then we might be going to da N.O.?? who knows? If they talk about Attendance, I think we got it.

I don't take away from those comments that the Cajuns could be in NO. Everything I heard has had Troy or Middle in NO.

My question is this, if Army wins and secures the eaglebank bowl, wouldn't that mean that a 6-6 Marshall would fall into the at large ranks. With that, if a regional bowl were open, say the GMAC, wouldn't we be as likely (if not more) to go to a bowl game then they are. I mean, you have to consider that Marshall doesn't have a real edge on us in population (because of market), and they just fired their head coach. I mean, I could conceivably see us beat them out for a bowl game if the right things happen.

Look, the bottom line is Troy and Middle are definitely in. Troy is either in NO or Mobile. I expect Troy to be in Mobile and Middle in NO because Southern Miss seems primed to be back in NO and that bowl committee doesn't want a rematch with Troy there. That leaves the Cajuns fighting for whatever is left, likely Little Caesars, EagleBank or Humanitarian. But Hawaii, Nebraska and Army must lose and Boise State must get a BCS bowl berth for that to be possible, otherwise Boise is likely in Mobile against probably Central Michigan. (The GMAC Bowl wants a showdown between the MAC and Sun Belt champs with Notre Dame staying home.).

You would think that the Cajuns would have a regional advantage over Marshall in Mobile, but Marshall would have the edge regionally for any bowls in the north or northeast. But my gut feeling is that Detroit will be the last opening and the best shot for the Cajuns after UCLA goes to Boise or DC, likely Boise due to proximity. That's why you need Marshall to stay in DC with an Army loss.

In the end it really it comes down to what the bowl selection committees want.

The Cajuns face steep odds to get in - yet it could happen if certain things fall into place and the numbers work in their favor.

I can't believe I'm stirring the pot here, but what about Bowling Green? I hear that the Humanitarian Bowl is interested in inviting them.

Bowling Green is one of the MAC schools that might not travel far for a bowl because the school would lose money after all the expenses due to the smaller payouts for the lesser bowls.

I didn't crunch the numbers like you did, I was thinking that GMAC could be the bowl it came down to, giving us a shot, but GMAC wanting troy makes it clear that a bowl opening will most likely not be regional putting us at a disadvantage over Marshall. For now, go Wisconsin, Texas and Navy. Thankfully, all 3 should be big favorites.
