I'm surprised no one has said anything about Special Teams, especially in the Troy game. Bustle still coaches Special Teams and gets credit whenever we block a field goal. But vs. Troy, Special Teams play was horrible and cost us the game. Two punts that went for about 15 yards each, giving Troy a short field from which they scored. Two missed extra points. Short kick-offs, again. Missed tackles on kick-off returns and great field position following those. If Bustle stays, he needs to hand those duties over to a full time coach.

And, I forgot to mention the onsides kick at the end of the game that was totally muffed and let Troy score another TD. All of that in a single game, the biggest game of the year. I don't hear Bustle taking any blame for any or all of that horrible Special Teams play.

Other than the blocking of kicks our special teams have been horrible for years. Our kickoff coverage is some of the worst I have ever seen in college football. We have tried traditional kicks, squib kicks, sky kicks, onside kicks. None of them have worked. In fact kicking it out of bounds is probably the highest percentage play we have.
Punt coverage is a little better only because our kicker "squibs" them down the field preventing a return..

For next year we have to find a kicker who can consistently reach the goalline. Do this and I bet our scoring defense improves by a touchdown or more.

FWIW, coach lustig is the special teams coordinator. He is in charge of the punt team and both kick off coverage and return. Bustle is in charge of punt return, and the kickers duties on fg and xtra points (which was awful).

    1. I wish we would have tried to score with 54secs and 3 times outs left before half time.

    2. Instead of buying the Rent-a-cop University Police 3-wheeled segways use that money for something useful!! Did anyone else see those things last night? I could never take any type of officer (fake UP or real cops) seriously on one of those things. _

I couldn't agree more! Haha my brother and I were discussing how they could just give raises with that money! Lord knows that police are underpaid.

The current coaching staff would have to prioritize signing a kicker, in the current recruiting cycle. Both Baer and Albrecht are underclasman and will both be returning for next season. A decision on really signing a kicker has not been made.

Word is Seth Sebastian from Lafayette High is going to sign else-where. Signing a kicker should be a priority. This kid is legit and he is going elsewhere.

Sebastian is the best kept secret in Lafayette. The Advertiser sure didn't help matters. I never saw any articles featuring him.

The running backs coach, Justin Ludwig, handles most of the special teams. Rickey works directly with the kickers.

Rickey also handles the punt block unit.
