Brad, I understand your passion. Coaching is a really awesome thing to do, especially for a school you love.
You bring up a good point. The best coached teams are usually the ones with some coaches on the court. I did not see Coach Lee miss 27 shots from the floor and commit 20 turnovers. He did not give up 32 points in the paint or allow 24 points after a turnover. What I did see was the coach put his team into a position to shoot an incredible 42 free throws - AND THEY STILL LOST!
This week has been filled with some pretty good tournament games on TV. From a UL fan perspective it is pretty clear to me that we are far from the upper echelon of NCAA Division 1 basketball based on talent alone. Mobile is 5-2 after losing on Wednesday to UNO (51-65). The thing I admired most about this opponent was their effort. The Creighton vs. Michigan OT game yesterday was all about effort from everyone that stepped on the court from both sides of the scorers table.
Our side needs to check their egos at the dressing room door and start playing like the other side is better than we are for forty minutes.
P.S. Southern Mississippi is undefeated at 4-0. West Alabama is 3-1 after dropping exhibitions to UL and Troy (93-99). Louisiana College beat St. Thomas by one, then was blitzed by McNeese (36-73). No big time national ranked teams anywhere making it more important to start kicking it up several notches to compete with the rest of our schedule starting with McNeese (beat LC by 37), LSU (3-0 at home, lost to #13 UCONN, play Arizona State today on ESPN), and Sam Houston State (4-2, lost at #4 Kentucky by 10). SHS beat us at home last year by two.
If we don't, we could enter SBC play at home undefeated but 1-5 overall.
Tim Duryea, Associate Coach, Utah State - look up their accomplishments at a "mid major" school.
This is the type of guy we need to bring in.
Beryl Shipley
BTW, Coach Ship and his wife celebrate 60 years of marriage last weekend. Congrats Coach!
Turbine you are right about the NCAA situation, but as we learned in Ron Gomez's book, Coach Shipley also had issues with some in the then USL administration. Some faculty deeply resented the success of basketball and were quite jealous of the attention Coach Shipley and his team were getting.
