I think he scampers off in open space because no defensive player takes him serious... and therefore it is there for you. I would not designate Chris to "run the ball 6-8 times"... although he would more than succeed if he "read" and "did". With Troy, they have to believe he will not pull the ball and take the end-around. I would pull one early just to serve notice. Jake was not nearly as good a runner as Chris... and he succeeded on the naked bootleg many times... when defenses least expected it. I think Chris misses some golden opportunities. But again... we are crazy if we do not acknowledge his nice passing skills.

As for McGuire... I see no reason why he doesn't come in more now that he's healthy. Some may disagree with me, but we will need to throw against Troy in order to win... and Chris tosses very well. We do not have the RB/QB combo, even with Brad in the game, to run the zone read and succeed against Troy. Of all the games, we need to play pitch and catch and have WRs hang onto the ball. I do think Brad should be a bigger factor than just the redzone short yardage QB. There are other down and yardage situations where Brad should be in the game.

I would much prefer seeing Brad run the Wild Cajun. If he came into the game and we ran the Wild Cajun... and Brad kept... he would roll up the middle for 10 easy ones. I am not sure what the coaches will decide to do after watching Troy on film this week... but I would not get silly and just play them straight up. Bustle has a habit of just having won a game he played conservatively... and gets mesmerized by it. No SBC team is nearly as potent as Troy. We have to throw some wrinkles into our offense against Troy... and our defense is going to have to fly to the ball like they've never done... in order to win... IMO _
We're going to need more wrinkles than Cloris Leechman after a three hour soak in a tub.

Seriously, we need to pull out all the stops on both sides of the ball. Everyone, players and staff, needs to realize that there is no tomorrow if this game is lost.

How can it be fixed? With few exceptions our kickers cannot get it past the 10yd line.

Our kicker needs to stop worrying about it going out of bounds and just bust the hell out of it. I prefer a screaming worm burner to that short soft floater that we cannot seem to cover. Going out of bounds and being "penalized" to their 40 seems not to be much of a penalty for us this year.

We really don't have a go-to guy and its going to whomever is open. He doesn't know who is going to be open until the play takes place so I would not agree with that assessment. If you want to say that he doens't have the strongest arm, then I I'm with you all the way but I haven't seen him to be deficient in his reads. I also believe that he will be better than you give him credit for. You discredit that rushing yards that "he leaves on the field" but I'm not sold that he is running the option on some of those plays rather than called dives. By that logic, you have to add about 40-50 yards to his passing stats due the drops that his receivers average of about 4-7 per game. This has plagued him all year.
Oh my god dude. Chris Masson is the definition of a one read Quarterback. Before the win saturday, the majority of the board brought this up every week! He has progressed, but he's still got a long way to go.. And weren't you the one belly-aching for Blaine Gautier in the offseason?! I have no bias because i said that i thought Masson would be the best choice. And maybe he is. But he still has issues. Again, serviceable; not great.

Apparently the coaches see it as a flaw since they even had Lance Kelly kicking in practice early in the season and reports were that he was putting it near the goal line. But for some reason the coaches are afraid to use Kelly in that role in the game and stick with Bear.

One of my favorite Cajun Field memories is 1993, UL vs Memphis, Jake's a freshman, a skinny kid, not the NFL player he would become. We're 3rd & goal, I think UM had held us out once before. So it's do or die.

We're all sitting there, wondering what the Cajuns will call. And here comes Ichabod Crane, all knees & elbows, running right up the middle.

Stunned everybody, not least of all, UM...

    UL won 17-15.

One of the years we played Tulane in the Dome with Jake at QB, it was one of the most comical QB keepers ever. We were on like the 4yd line and Tulane loaded the box. Jake looked over the defense, barked out an audible, pointing at every player on the Tulane side... he turns around and fakes the hand-off (naked bootleg) starts to jog away from the play... then practically walks toward the pylon, glancing back at a totally fooled Tulane defense, without anyone on the Tulane defense even noticing until the TD signal goes up. A huge pile at the goal line and Jake just walked into the endzone and tossed the ball to an official. It was the biggest fake I'd seen up to that point in college ball.

Not only do I think Chris has an open end around at his disposal on that fake handoff, he seems to have the wheels to run a playaction bootleg on that run. He could pull coverage with it and likely toss to an open receiver. I just don't understand why he's running uncovered so many times... and doesn't ever have the ball.

He has to do it early against Troy to keep that defense spread out. We cannot leave anything on the field for regrets.

And the point I'm making DUDE, is that the coaches have mentioned quite often that many of those handoffs to the back were planned rather than zone reads. They also noted that the opposite DE that the QB reads would always stay out to make sure the QB did not keep the ball. We are in a one read offense when it comes to the running game so the defense has something to say on who keeps the ball.

However, you were referring to the passing game when you spoke of him being a one read QB and I don't think he is at all. So which is it? I'm not saying he's an all-star, but rather, a productive QB that has not been helped by a poor running scheme and dropped passes by his WR's. I have no bias as well. Yes, I did believe Gautier would be the starter and guess what, he will be in the future. However, Masson has impressed me with his ability to produce given his lack of experience. I do not think that Masson is a great option QB but I've also called for more playaction and possible pro formations the entire year rather than the stupid zone read.
