Thread: Chris Masson

I think Masson is coming to form very nicely and during last game it seemed like he finally got enough confidence to throw down field vs. single man coverage, now we just have to see if our receivers can catch the ball next time.

Anyone with a perfunctory knowledge of football can see that the guy is a one-read Quarterback. If the hot route isn't open, he panics. He is wildly inconsistent, and he leaves 50-60 rushing yards on the field every saturday afternoon. Granted, he is a sophomore, and it is his first year starting, but things like staring down recievers and not checking down are fixable things that he continues to do. He's been serviceable, but he's no all star.

I got to tell you, I guess I don't know as much about the game as I thought because I cannot tell that he is strictly a one read QB. Maybe when he's got a large man bearing down upon him have I seen him get rid of it quickly but this offense is not based on reading one receiver. We really don't have a go-to guy and its going to whomever is open. He doesn't know who is going to be open until the play takes place so I would not agree with that assessment. If you want to say that he doens't have the strongest arm, then I I'm with you all the way but I haven't seen him to be deficient in his reads. I also believe that he will be better than you give him credit for. You discredit that rushing yards that "he leaves on the field" but I'm not sold that he is running the option on some of those plays rather than called dives. By that logic, you have to add about 40-50 yards to his passing stats due the drops that his receivers average of about 4-7 per game. This has plagued him all year.

I really think ladarius green could be that "go to guy" if UL gave him the opportunity to be. if not this year then next. but they just cant limit his abilities

Right now QB is not our problem area. Our RB and WR are not getting the job done. Masson has raised his level of play, it is now time for someone other than Green to raise theirs.

Chris did have at least three nice long throws that were dropped. Granted they would have been highlight reel catches but thats what D1A WR are supposed to make. I do still have a bone to pick with him never pulling the ball and taking it around the outside. The D is completely giving up on that option; probably because it has no credibility since he never, ever does it.

A legit question to ask is do we abandon the zone read next year? Masson is obviously not a runner and has an above average arm. My only reservation is that our other QB's are suited for the zone read scheme.

I agree with you but as someone else said I'm guessing those are not zone read plays.
If I were coach (you can all be thankful I'm not) I would have Masson run the ball 6-8 times per game. I would also have McGuire throw a pass or 2.

I am very pleased with Chris's passing abilities. But, there are times, as Hammer says, that he should pull the ball and run. It isn't necessarily that he's going to gain a lot of yards... but the intent is to keep a defense guessing. I think he scampers off in open space because no defensive player takes him serious... and therefore it is there for you. I would not designate Chris to "run the ball 6-8 times"... although he would more than succeed if he "read" and "did". With Troy, they have to believe he will not pull the ball and take the end-around. I would pull one early just to serve notice. Jake was not nearly as good a runner as Chris... and he succeeded on the naked bootleg many times... when defenses least expected it. I think Chris misses some golden opportunities. But again... we are crazy if we do not acknowledge his nice passing skills.

As for McGuire... I see no reason why he doesn't come in more now that he's healthy. Some may disagree with me, but we will need to throw against Troy in order to win... and Chris tosses very well. We do not have the RB/QB combo, even with Brad in the game, to run the zone read and succeed against Troy. Of all the games, we need to play pitch and catch and have WRs hang onto the ball. I do think Brad should be a bigger factor than just the redzone short yardage QB. There are other down and yardage situations where Brad should be in the game.

I would much prefer seeing Brad run the Wild Cajun. If he came into the game and we ran the Wild Cajun... and Brad kept... he would roll up the middle for 10 easy ones. I am not sure what the coaches will decide to do after watching Troy on film this week... but I would not get silly and just play them straight up. Bustle has a habit of just having won a game he played conservatively... and gets mesmerized by it. No SBC team is nearly as potent as Troy. We have to throw some wrinkles into our offense against Troy... and our defense is going to have to fly to the ball like they've never done... in order to win... IMO

That's Nellson from Acadiana. Saw him several times this year and he can kick. Granted he kicks off from the 40 yard line but he puts the ball out of the enc zone most of the time. With that said, in college he will but it in the end zone. And he will only get stronger with age....get this kid......

Hate to hijack this tread, but the kickoff situation for next year has to be fixed. We routinely give the other team a short field after a score. It is killing us. A guy who could kick the ball into the endzone would be worth 50-100 yards a game.

I seen that Saturday night also. Go with it 2-3 times a game. He could have made some big yardage.

It needs to be fixed bofore the Troy game Saturday. We cannot expect to beat Troy if we are having to drive 80 or more yards and they only have to go 60 or less to score.
