I'm certainly no football coach, but I have always wondered why UL is not in a 3-4 defense. We always seem to have a shortage of big defensive tackles and a plethora of linebackers and we are going for more team speed. We have two big defensive ends and some good, fast linebackers that would allow us to blitz more. It would seem to be a defense made for mid-major programs who seem to always lose out to the BCS schools for the better DT. Just wondering what the shortcomings of a 3-4 are, given the success ULM has had this year, even with a new coaching staff and this new system.
ULM plays a 3-3-5 not a 3-4. The concept of 3 down linemen is the same but there are differences. In those formations, your 3 down linemen have to be able to control the running lanes and also be pretty good pass rushers. In effect, less players you have on the line, the better the remaining players must play. Linebackers cover the other gaps on the line in run coverage. Secondary has to be very versatile. FS can alternate into a LB to show a 3-4 defense. Most of the time, 3-3-5 is used for teams with speed and less size. Plus you usually need a really good NT.
I am amused how often success is the scheme and failure is the players.
We better slap ULM back down to the ground. If we lose to them it will be awful. I saw one of their games on TV and they are not a very good football team. They are very beatable especially at home.
