Thread: Sun Belt working toward more postseason opportunities

  1. UL Football Sun Belt working toward more postseason opportunities

For the first time since the Sun Belt Conference formed in 2001, the conference could have three teams with seven or more wins.

Troy and Middle Tennessee both have seven wins heading into this weekend and ULM is bidding for its seventh win this weekend against Louisiana.

It’s a huge step forward for the youngest FBS league. The Sun Belt Conference is likely to send three teams to bowl games this year, the most the conference has ever sent to the postseason.

The Sun Belt has just one guaranteed bowl agreement with the New Orleans Bowl, but has secondary agreements with the St. Petersburg Bowl, Papa Johns Bowl and Independence Bowl should the conferences contracted to those bowls not have enough bowl-eligible teams.

The St. Petersburg Bowl is likely to have an opening, as is the GMAC Bowl, which could try and pit the Mid-American Conference champion against the Sun Belt champion for the first time.

The Cajuns have communicated with the New Orleans, GMAC, St Pete and Humanitarian bowls. But they need to get to 7 wins to even have a shot.

Here is an interesting scenario, although not likely to happen. UL beats ULM and Troy to get 7 wins. ULM loses to UL but beats MT for 7 wins. MT loses to A State and ULM for 7 wins. Troy loses to FAU and UL for 7 wins, but wins the SBC to go to the NO Bowl. That leaves 3 other 7 win teams, but the conference only gets 2 bowl invitations. Who stays home? UL has a signature win vs. K State. MT has two signature wins vs. Memphis and Maryland. ULM has no signature wins. Who is leading the conference in attendance, which could also be a deciding factor.

If that happened, Troy would end up in Mobile or Birmingham (if that opens up) and UL would be in New Orleans as long as Middle Tennessee ended up somewhere (likely St. Pete or Mobile.)

ULM would be left out and should be if that's what happens.
