Thread: Horrible 2nd half playcalling

UL Football Horrible 2nd half playcalling

Can anyone tell me what adjustment we made in the second half?

Jay Walker said in his broadcast that he thought MTSU blitz 80% of the time. I would think the offensive coordinator would have some HOT ROUTES (Hint: SLANTS). I did not see any running back screens or any other plays to slow down the blitz. We continued to run, run then 3rd and whatever, when we were averaging 2.28 yards per run.

I think the offensive coordinator should call meeting with the team so he can apologize to them for being out-coached and he should issue a special apology to Chris Masson.

That has been the story of the season and it's not just the offense. As a team we make no adjustments. NONE. we come out for the second half the same way we do for the start of the game. High school coaches can see that adjustments need to be made at halftime. Why can't our coaches who are making alot of money do there job not finish a game?

Oh, we have hot routes. The problem is, MTSU knows what they are and they jumped them all night as you saw them jump the short screen and take the INT to the house. They know that we run these bubble screens all game and they also know that when a DL is aggressive and putting pressure on a QB, one way to combat that is to run misdirection and screens to throw them off. That's fine except we run those all of the time anyway so MTSU is waiting on it. We have no variation in our offense and its frustrating. I think we have some quality young players that will be very solid in their time here but I think the major problem is scheme. How long will it take Bustle and staff to note that the Zone read is obsolute in our current state due to lack of playmakers. Its rediculous. I screamed this in the offseason and I don't know nearly what a coach knows. Its not hard to see that success will be limited running this offense with current personnel.

Defensively, we are just not physical enough. Against spread offenses, you have to have a good, physical DL that can pressure the QB without blitz help and allow the guys behind you to make plays and cover. We don't have that. It's funny to see MTSU's DL getting 5 sacks, most of them when running a 3 man line!!! They sacked Masson time after time with only 3 men rushing and often double teamed. They made Decoster and Pirtle look like little boys. We don't have the physical nature to do this. I haven't seen athletes like Hall Davis and Terrell Richardson not be able to get to the QB like these guys.

As usual, you are half right. The zone read could be very productive with our current personnel, just not with the QB we are using, as he reads very poorly. Of course, with McGuire injured and Gauthier clearly not ready, we don't have too much choice.

Defensively, we just need to be consistantly aggressive. Anytime we play read and react instead of attack on defense, we will get burned. This year, we have been above average defensively when we play aggressively [lsu, the first half of KSU] and have essentially sucked when we read and react [FAU, UNT]. A coaches job is to determine what his charges need to do to have a chance to win, then teach them to do it, and have the fortitude [the coaches, not the players] to stick with what works best. I think our coaches have done ok on the first two, but are failing miserably in the third.

One of my pet peeves is people blaming playcalling after a loss. In the games I have watched, I have seen some good misdirection plays, waggle plays and excellent utilization of the TE. What I have not seen is a playmaker. Has a RB other than Sails made anybody miss this year? Are any of our WR able to consistently make plays? Can our QB's make the right reads?
Last year we had an explosive team. I KNOW Chery would have brought one of those kickoffs to the house. I KNOW the 6 yard run by Masson would have been a 40yd run by Des. We don't even need to talk about the difference at RB.

The points is...we are hurting at the skill positions. Play calling can always be better, but it is not the main reason we sometimes struggle on offense.

McGuire was ready to play saturday. Why they didn't use him...?

Up to this point in the year we have been outscored 145-64 in the second half. 5 times this year we have put up 3 points or less in the second half, including getting outscored 20-0 against MT. Pretty pitiful.

This has been the story of most of the last 3 years.

    Lay off the OC...

This is the third OC the Cajuns have had, but we are still running the same 4 or 5 plays, so in my opinion it is all Bustle.

    Hello, my friend.

I have been asking that question every week for a good while now. Of course, I have been asking myself, so I haven't gotten a good answer.

Come see us at the Eauque Saturday. We've missed you this year.
