I beleive the admission standards are changing because the test has been changed. When I took the ACT if you scored 24+ it was a pretty good score. Now I see neices and nephews who are total lumps that can barely write a sentance score over 20. The ACT has been dummied down over the years and apparenty it now takes a mid 20 score to be true college freshman material. Implement the 2 year junior college system and then the students that need the additional help can start at a junior college get the basics out of the way and prove that they have the drive and ambition to finish school, then let them move up. We have to face it not all are ready to attend a 4 year college right out of high school and junior college is an excellent alternative for them to "get their feet wet" and prove that they are ready, and the one's that are will move on to 4 year colleges and the ones that wash out of junior college will go on to other types of jobs but they will not be wasting the time of professors and other students clogging up the 4 year system

You are right. The ACT scoring system did change. I can't find it right now but under certain circumstances it was two to three points different. The biggest reason (IMHO) for the change is to get rid of the remedial work. Historically the University has used a large part of their resources in remedial classes for freshmen who simple are not ready.

Why not make remedial pay to play outside of tops. This would do several things; get HS students attention, show you who is serious, pay for the program, increase student body, increase alumni, increase donors, attract better athletes or at the very least not shut the door prematurely.

Well, this move certainly won't help the football recruiting. But I agree that the scoring has changed, my younger cousin who is by no means brilliant, scored a 28 on the ACT. I scored a 22 in 2001 and was in the top 25% of the private highschool that I went to.

Research shows that the BEST predictor of a college student's success in college (graduating with a degree) is actually the PARENT'S educational background. If Ma and Pa graduated from college, Jr. has a much higher chance of graduating from college.

Here's the current requirements for admission.

    Guaranteed admissions for students who:

    1. Complete Louisiana Board of Regents' high school core curriculum with:
    A. 19 ACT math (460 SAT math)
    OR
    B. 18 ACT English (450 SAT verbal)

    AND

    2. ONE of the following:
    A. 2.5 unweighted GPA
    OR
    B. 23 ACT composite (1050 SAT math and verbal) with 2.0 GPA
    OR
    C. Rank in the top 25% of class with 2.0 GPA.

I think the "and" in the article was supposed to be an "or." I think the proposed criteria change is only supposed to slightly raise options A or B of part 2.

Looking at the Fall 2008 statistics, incoming UL students' ACT scores were:
    20 - 25%tile
    24 - 75%tile

If that news release is correct, roughly 3/4 of UL's 2008 freshman class would have been rejected. No way that news release is correct with the "and" statement.

That's exactly what I said in an earlier post. We would instantly lose 50% to 75% of our freshman class... then after 4 or 5 years, our total attendance might be down 50% or more!
