Well said. It's mind-boggling how hard it is for these guys to accomplish the intangibles of the game. Seems like almost all of them have an attitude, and not the good kind. Like I've said many times, attitude reflects leadership. Long is the best player on this team, so by default he is the leader, and the team follows in his foot steps. I said earlier in the year (and got crushed for it), this team can not lean on Shawn Long and expect to be a winner. I'm not saying I don't like Shawn, or don't want him on the team (without him, we're probably a 5-7 win team in total rebuilding mode), but I never bought into him as the focal point of a winning program. He was a hell of a Robin to Payton's Batman though.
I really like Marlin, but his tenure sure resembles that of Rickey Bustle's... (I know its been said before) Now we wait at least 2 years to find out if we can find a Basketball version of Hud. The sad thing is that there is enough talent in the program to make a run in the Conf. Tourney to get back to the NCAA's. I guess that's the problem... It would not shock me if we can't win another game or win the Tourney!
Actually, when Jay Wright threw that half asp shot with his back to the goal in the second half, is exactly what I thought. Park ball crap. Yes he was fouled, but damn it, try! We were down! Microcosm of the whole game.
Also want to ask Cajun90, which missed layup you're referring to....think you could pick from quite a few...sadly, lol.
Our perimeter D looked pretty decent, but UT-Arlington figured out early in the second half that we're slow to react and collapse the lanes to the basket. And they seriously know how to finish at the basket. Marlin desperately needs a player-personality-leader to keep this team in the proper psychological perspective in all games, at all times. When we fail to score and get behind, we look like a leaderless unhappy group. I can't get over how many poor looks we had and still took shots in the second half. We're schizophrenic offensively. It's weird.
As someone who's watched the Cajuns since 1960...today's basketball was just unacceptable. Will probably skip Thursday.
I'll never give up on a Cajun team, but chosing softball over basketball today was a wise decision. It just gets old watching these guys implode every other game.
Every time we have a weak crowd, in any sport, people make excuses why we had a poor showing. STOP WITH THE EXCUSES! I can tell you why people don't show up, because this team sucks. Win games and people will come. Win games, bring in quality opponents, win those games and you will have bigger crowds. You can't be good here and there and expect there to be a big following.
IMO, Marlin needs to go after this year. He's had enough time and we haven't gotten that much better under his tenure. Time for some new blood.
Oddly (and I didn't actually verify through stats) they didn't do the usual massive turnovers. I thought they hustled, pushed the ball well, and got open looks, shot well, blocked out, rebounded well, got put backs, and kept a team that was running and gunning... contained fairly well... in the first half. UT-Arlington decided we couldn't keep them from slicing to the hole... and they were right. And all they did defensively was get in our grill. We took shots without screening or passing outside-in, inside-out, to get open shots. We know we can't dribble inside of 12 feet and not lose the ball. But shooting through a curtain isn't these guys best game either.
