we are talking about a jump up from Div. II to FBS football.... not a jump around in the same league. The man got back into coaching football because he truly has a passion for the game. thats probably what people thought when bustle was being thought of for the coaching job here. bustle came and got us out of the _____ hole so that hire has somewhat panned out. time for the next big thing...
I don't have a list but I do have criteria.
No coordinators who only want to see what it is like to be a head coach and who have to learn the HC duties on the job.
Hire a briliant DII or FCS coach who has had good success working with a smaller budget than he will have to work with at UL.
A coach of this sort is more likely to bring his well oiled machine (staff) with him. While the ex big time coach has frieds who all have good jobs and would be filling a staff not knowing the chemistry.

I have heard with the RCAF in place the next coach will make between 400 & 500k. If the next coach is not the second highest paid coach in the state then we should all learn to accept 5-6 or maybe 6-6 every few years and middle the of pack in the belt.
First, Bustle isn't a "clown". We don't need to "run him off". We simply have to get done with this season and pay out his contract. Bustle does not need to be ridiculed for us to come to the business decision that must take place. He also has every opportunity, albeit incredibly remote, to win 7 games this season and retain his position.
First, buying out his remaining contract isn't a bad deal for us, and it isn't a bad deal for him. It sucks to have to depart with coaches. However, it absolutely goes with the territory. Coaches don't even expect to be retained when they cannot win against the absolute worst teams in their conference and in the country.
Second, we have all the money we need. I mean all of it... to buy out... and to purchase absolutely whatever coach and staff we choose. It is all up to our admin as to whether they will go that route. We simply need to keep having intelligent conversations with our administration about our continued loyalty to the program being predicated on assurance from them that we are making the next huge correct step.
The chatter is normal for the circumstances... but we need to focus our energy on our administrative handlers. They have all of the decision making authority. There is nothing beyond their means... absolutely nothing. That is a FACT.
I agree. Bustle should be remembered much the same way Bowers at Southern Miss is remembered. He brought them to a certain level, which was better than the previous level. Then it was time to take the next step.
Sometime in December, it will be our turn to take the next step.
For what it's worth:
Willie Martinez (DC, likely out of a job at Georgia after year end)
Ty Willingham
Carl Franks (OC, South Florida - great recruiter and former Duke head coach - strong on academics)
We are in a Catch 22 scenario. We need a new coach and staff and will only, likely, get one if we lose our next 4 games. On the other hand, we want to win. If we should split our next four winning 2 and finishing with a 6-6 record, our administration will very likely keep Bustle for at least another year. Then, it will be another year of mediocrity, low attendance, no bowl game, and wait til next season, AGAIN.
I feel for the players who are subjected to this coaching nightmare. We all talk about Bustle. What about our Offensive and Defensive Coordinators? Fouquier was our defensive savior, someone who was going to recruit faster players, play defense with reckless abandon, blitz and dominate. I understand what happened last year because of the key injuries. But, this year? Our defense is absolutely pathetic. We have NO Pass rush. We let FIU score field goals in the final minute of both the first half and the game with long drives. Our special teams have been the only thing to hang our hat on this year and it was our special team that failed, allowing a blocked kick to end the game. Offensively, we aren't blocking anyone, our QB coudn't hit water if he fell out of a boat, our receivers run bad routes and can't get open, we have no speed at running back, we aren't finishing in the red zone, blah, blah, blah. Bustle said at the beginning of the year that we had the talent to compete for the SBC Championship and certainly a bowl game. He said this was our best defensive team since he's been here and it would be the strength of this team. WRONG!
I've been following UL for over 30 years and every year it is the same thing. We have grown to accept mediocrity. No, let me rephrase that. We have been down so long, mediocrity looks good and that is alarming. At least now, a couple of years of mediocrity give hope to actually having a winning season and a bowl game. I'm glad so many here are p*ssed off and I am, too. This is just no longer tolerable. We'll keep our die-hard bunch of fans and continue to get 15,000 a game and compete at the lowest level of 1A football and many will be there week-in and week-out, no matter what. I just can't tell you how excited I am about playing a conference game against FIU before 2,500 people and LOSING. I can't wait for next week's debacle. Wonder why we are losing people to LSU? If this continues much longer, UL will lose me to Texas.
In my mind, the ONLY thing that keeps Bustle here beyond this year is if we win a MINIMUM of 3 of the last 4 games AND go to a bowl game. We all know that will not happen. 6-6 will not cut it. It is time for a change in coaching, a committment from the administration to winning, a step-up to get alumni and fans reinvigorated about UL athletics. Failure to do that and let yet another coach ride out the final year of his contract will be the doom of this program.
