Thread: Tell me about your pitching staff!

  1. #1

UL Baseball Tell me about your pitching staff!

My son is a Sr. in high school in Houston and he is interested in UL.

His fastball is usually between the low to mid 80's.
He is still growing due to his age. He just turned 17 and I am fairly sure he will be able to hit the 90's by the time he is finishing college.
He has developed a very good curve ball and he has an effective change up.

How good is the pitching staff at UL?

Is Robe and his staff good enough to get him to the next level?

Does UL use its pitchers wisely or does the pitching staff have constant arm problems?

    Thanks,

How many made it to the mlb?

What kind of coach is Robe?

Is he a good guy to play for?

I've read as many negative opinions about him as positive opinions on this site...

    Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the inquiry and your interest in UL... I am nothing more than a fan, but I have a man crush on Robe... Why? because I have never seen a coach who cares more about his players than does Robe and one who will make sure they do the right thing. Our local news paper once published his contract with his players and it included such things as personal hygien and living conditions...e.g. "If I ever stop at your apartment, and I will, and it is unkempt (is that the right word??? lol), there will be a series of consequences"... paraphrasing of course.... and his policy regarding alcohol and drug abuse is very strict and adhered to... Another example... the year after we went to the World Series we had a kid (I forget his name right off) who started a game in the CWS as a Freshman and was outstanding. he got caught with marijuana in his car.... the kid was suspended for a year... after his suspension he was approached by the University of Tennessee to transfer without consequences... the kid said no, I screwed up and I will deal with my suspension and return... the kid could not play or practice with the team for a year... he had to earn his way back onto the team... he would come sit in the stands during that year.. and he ultimately did... i think this speaks volumes about Robe AND the way the kids respect him....

Thats the type of INDIVIDUAL who will be a part of your son's life if he comes here... As a coach, I dont think you would find a better pitching environment than working under Robe... He will not, regardless of the situation, overuse a pitcher... others like the legendary Skip Bertman at LSU, would do so and did... He has a history of sending pitchers into the pros, some to the bigs...

again i know I have a man crush on him but i would not think you could find a better environment for a young pitcher than UL...

Keep us informed and good luck

Scott Dohmann and BJ Ryan made it to MLB, and look for Danny Farquhar to be there soon.

As far as what kind of coach he is, he has his rules. I don't have first hand experience so I can only tell you what I have heard from some players that I know. He will put the best team on the field no matter who they are. While winning is important, he also values developing you as a player and a man.

Is he good to play for? It depends on the player. If he is willing to show up and work hard for his position then yes. If he expects to just show up and play then no.

ah yes one more thing to add emphasis to what an earlier poster said... The eviornment at the Tigue is leagendary... We have been written up in SI as one of the top ten College Baseball places to visit.... You will find large and enthusiastic corwds at all fo the games... the environment is "fun" to say the least... We have a group that barbeques for the visiting teams and when the opposition's fans leave here they often post on this board what a great environment and how they cant wait to return.... you and your son will LOVE it here

We stopped and visited Tigue Field this past summer.

My son and I were impressed with the venue even without any fans...

And it is only going to get better over the next couple of years, starting with new turf for this upcoming season.
