Thread: Long short on words after solid performance

  1. Default Long short on words after solid performance

UL — With a 20-point lead and the first half winding down, Louisiana point guard Jay Wright turned and found an inexplicably open Shawn Long standing behind the 3-point line.

Wright dished, Long rose and fired.
And why not? A few days after ...

I hopearlin has a talk with him about his Marshawn Lynch style "Im Thankful" press conference. I don't think Long realizes how much maturity, or a lack there of, can effect his draft stock.

    What a joke.

Good for Luke calling him out.

Yea, that guy is our "leader".
    Man I miss EP.

"But in my world, I’m going to remember the lack of courtesy more clearly than the memorable performance he turned in minutes earlier, and that’s a shame, because Long was truly special Thursday night."

Kind of like a great writer and his fine work being overshadowed by calling Nevada Reno "Nevada" but refusing "Louisiana" the same courtesy.

    Other than that, I'm thankful.

They got the official state blessing to be called Nevada a good while back. Luke has to answer to his bosses, and I am not happy with his bosses, but he has been nothing but good to us. He asked for a chance, he told us up front what he was not allowed to do. Man of his word IMO. Take it up with future candidate Georges.

I'm not saying what Long did was right but I also don't think it is real professional of Johnson to essentially call him out in the article for his silence as well. JMO

You know full well "Louisiana" is 100% legal and Nevada is only used for athletics.

The kid was having fun! It's not his job to help write any reporters story.

Was it creative not at all but after getting beat up on by fans and media for their lack of consistent play, they finally had fun! Let them live a little.

Exactly. I like Luke a lot but I don't necessarily agree with his views on how college athletes have some sort of obligation to the media like pro athletes do. I remember back in the football season when he was ticked off about Broadway not being made available for comment after the bad start after a game. He felt there was some form of "accountability" he had to the media about his performance and I totally disagree.

Thats how good reporters feel. It's their job to hold players accountable and get some sort of reaction. It's in their DNA. I have no problem with Luke feeling that way. Long has been difficult in the past, and this is probably just the latest episode. Players want to get paid to play college sports but they don't want to treat it like a job. Shawn is in a position of leadership for his team and university. He is somewhat obligated to treat that status as a it should be treated; with dignity and respect.

I personally don't care if any player in any sport is ever made available to the media. Long didn't say anything disrespectful or do harm to anyone with his statements. From everything I know about Long, that is just Long being Long. He is a guy that likes to joke and have fun. Maybe the stories should have been about how he was having fun and not about how he didn't give you a quote.
