I'm not against turf per say . . .
However, I don't like the idea that to make this work UL will need to cut out more than a few strips of turf and place them on a roof somewhere so they can fade evenly with the rest of the field in order to replace the base areas that wear out rather fast.
Just leave the base paths dirt and I am happy.
Also couldn't UL have hired Lawn & Order cheaper?
From earlier discussions about the field turf, the only dirt on the field will be the pitchers mound. The batters box, basepaths, and outfield warning track are supposed to be dirt colored turf.
I think they were going to keep the grass, but seeing how well the field did at the conference tournament last year with the amount of rain experienced, they decided turf was the way to go.
Like a lot of others I prefer natural grass but I fully understand why they are going to artificial turf. Maintenance is minimal and for a baseball field that is an important point. Players today like it. It plays more consistently.
Most importantly is the all weather feature. I think everyone had to be impressed with the conference tournament last year. If that had not been a turf surface I don't think they would have gotten the tournament in. In South Louisiana having a playing surface that is not at the whim of mother nature is a huge advantage.
Aw jeezs!! You had to bring up artificial turf here!! :P
