  1. UL Softball Five Lady Cajuns Named NFCA Scholar Athletes

Five Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball players were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athletes for the 2008-09 academic year. Donna Bourgeois, Ashley Brignac, Kelly Cormier, Shari Sigur and Courtney Trahan were honored for their excellence in the classroom.

The Cajuns ended the year with a 45-13 overall record, finishing the year ranked 25th in the nation. The 45 wins marked the 17th time in program history UL has amassed 45-plus wins on the year and the ninth time under the Lotiefs.

UL finished the season with their eighth regular season Sun Belt Conference title; their ninth SBC Tournament championship and their 19th NCAA Regional berth.

The Ragin' Cajuns had seven players named All-Sun Belt Conference on the year, with Bourgeois and Karli Hubbard taking Pitcher of the Year and Player of the Year accolades, respectively. Christi Orgeron was tabbed as the Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year. Bourgeois and Hubbard, along with Melissa Verde were named to the NFCA All-South Region. Hubbard picked up another accolade as she was named third team All-American by the NFCA.

The NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete award recognizes those student-athletes who have earned a 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for an academic year.

Interesting. 3 of 5 are pitchers. Pitch for the Cajuns and you got a shot at having at least a 3.5 gpa. I'm sure that's all it takes.

Another interesting tidbit; all five are LOUISIANA girls!

Four educated in private/parochial schools and one public.

Jr. Donna is majoring in Biology,
    Jr. Ashley in Exercise Science,
    Sr. Kelly in Speech Pathology,
    Sr. Shari in Accounting
    and Sr. Courtney in English.

These are not "basket weaving" majors.
