Hopefully, everyone will mentally frame this and talk of getting injured moreso in games against highly ranked opponents with discontinue.

We need to mark this one down and hopefully... just hopefully... people will stop perpetuating this totally uneducated football myth. I do not expect it out of guys that have watched football, intensely, their entire lives. Injuries, with the exception of emotional injuries to the soft-hearted, and the rank of your opponent are in no way related.

I agree with you, LSU is not more or less likely to injure our players, however the fear I always have is not that the ranked team was more likely to injure us, but rather that we are risking getting injuries in games we have little chance of winning. Especially if those injuries hurt our chances in conference play, where every game is winnable and to me more important. All things being equal, I'd rather risk the injuries against Houston, UTEP, Tulsa, etc -- better teams that we normally still have a better chance of winning against, to help us get to the 7+ win range. Alas, we have to play these games to pay the bills, so I always hope we don't lose anyone critical (or anyone at all) before we even start conference play. I can't speak for everyone else, but that's what I always mean when I say "I hope no one gets hurt". Not scared of LSU/Nebraska......just REALLY want to see 7 wins!

Yea, like Charlie K said, there's really 2 lines of thinking on this. Some look at it as the BCS schools players are bigger, faster, stronger and will hurt our little guys while others look at it as we are trying to win our conference first and foremost and we dont want to lose guys for the season in a non-conference matchup, that includes SU, KSU, LSU and Nebraska. The former is far from the truth while the latter is a real and valid concern, IMO

IMO, the team you play has NOTHING to do with injuries incurred during a game. We lost our best players last year in the NT and ULM games after going through KSU and Illinois injury free. What concerns me is the style of ball that some of the top schools play. NU is a much bigger and physical team than we will see in the SBC and they play that way. When they are power rushing us, there's a whole lotta hitting going on that accompanies that style of play. This is where a defense can wear down and get injured.

I have no problems going in with the attitude of winning and playing your best players. However, a guy like Rolle or Kelley, who could probably play if they had to is better to get the extra rest and be good for conference play. I think we can surprise a team like Nebraska to be honest and I want our guys going in with the same attitude.

I always go into a game hoping no player, including an opponent player, gets hurt. I don't mind an opposing player getting his bell rung or a muscle cramp... but I wish no permanent harm on these young men. All games are a risk of injury, no matter the team. The subject of who we schedule and why is another subject altogether. My point is the silly notion that many have that you increase your odds of injury against a highly ranked opponent.

Personally, I don't buy that you increase the probability of injury when you are worn out. I think you just get manhandled and that's about it. Some player collisions cause injury, but most injuries are due strictly to angles of force on the human body that have little regards to player size. All of the young men on the field are capable of producing the angles, velocities, and mass to inflict damage to others and themselves.

I know what you mean by saying it, but I really don't like the mindset, for our team, of "winning seven games". Wins don't come in clumps. I want us to win every game... infinitum... one game at a time. Let's tally up the total at the end.

My short memory tells me that some of our worst beat-downs have come against USM. It's about getting hit and not hitting back.

Word. Just comenting the fear is not just that LSU is bigger and badder, but rather the risk versus reward aspect of the game. That being said, Nebraska is on the schedule, so let's go up there and shock those cornholers!

Tyrell Fenroy got a concussion against Southern Miss last season and wasn't the same until playing Kansas State. Lance Kelley was hurt early against Illinois last season and missed the rest of the year.

And Mike went down on a phantom move after handing the ball off, Richard and Grant both tore their ACL's on plays that could have happened in a shoulder pads and helmet practice. I'm not sure on the point. We gave Richard Dickson from LSU a mild concussion this past weekend also....???

The point is that you're wrong that the team suffered no injuries in non-conference play.

UH, JP I think you are taking that statement a bit far. First, Fenroy was never out for any period of time due to that injury and both he and Kelley's injuries occurred in a manner that would be consistent with ANY football game. Kelley could have gotten his ankle torn up by a defender from Southern. I'm trying to make a point that the caliber of opponent had nothing to do with the injuries that decimated this team.

Gerron Blount's leg fracture that was sustained this past week could have occurred in any game.
