UL's offense came back to earth, but delivered at crunch time

"The Ragin’ Cajuns committed three turnovers in the first half against Kansas State. They lost fumbles on two of their first three drives and had a bad snap that resulted in a safety in the first quarter on their fourth possession."
I didn't think it was possible for us to do this and beat a Kansas St. It is certainly a huge positive when a team overcomes so many self inflicted wounds and beats a quality opponent in these circumstances.
As I watched K State wrestle control of the game from the Cajuns in the third and fourth quarters by running the same basic play over and over, I thought I was witnessing the 2005 Central Fla game. It turned out I was actually watching the Cajuns who found a way to fight back and win like they did in the Ark St game in 2008.
Then and now?
Some of this goes back on the coaching staff as Bustle went real conservative on the play calls in the second half. I suppose they were just trying to get them focused on not turning the ball over like they were doing in the first half.
Often a problem with going conservative is it has the opposite of the intended effects.
Not always but sometimes players lose a sense of intensity because of the familiarity.

I forgot the exact time left in the 2nd half---but heard Jay mention that we had had only 12 offensive plays------this completely --well almost --wore the defense down!!!!
Most importantly... AWESOME!... huge win... needed the W... nice resume boost for UL. Albrecht and our Defense... spectacular... offensive pass protection was very good (may be nicest surprise going forward)... Chris is proving that he has good vision and a nice accurate throw... just needs to keep working on timing.
C4L, you know how pumped I get during the game... but you are right... our offensive playcalling in the second half was made for losing. If we had pounded KSU in the first half, and seen that we were wearing them down defensively... then you run on first down and more. Those last offensive series tried their best to give the game away. And you don't throw a bomb on 2nd and 9 when what you really need is first downs, time off the clock, and rest for your defense. Our OC needs to hug Tyler and our defense all week long.
We are no longer a team that runs, runs and occasionally passes to keep a defense honest. We have switched overnight to a passing game that sets up the run. Again, we are a passing threat that might just bust a run on you. We did not have the KSU defense worn down. No way. Our OC needs to know when a defense is worn down enough to open rushing lanes. I do believe our OC and Bustle have this in their heads... I could not believe we didn't open up the last 2 series with some safe 4-7 yard passes. Chris looked good in some of the playaction rollouts. That would have been my first down call on those final series. Without a doubt, however, I loves me this win.
Thank you D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Tyler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Cajun Footballers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also think Chris showed how young he still is in terms of game experience. A couple of times he looked like he really gunned a few passes when he needed a bit more touch and missed a couple of key throws. Also there was a time or two where he tried to go deep to a covered receiver when he could have tucked and run for 5 or more yards which would have put us in second or third and short instead of third and long. Hopefully the coaches will work on this with him.
We went with plenty of 4-7 yard passes especially when we got our normal 1 yard run on the first down zone read dives that we tend to run to exhaustion. The problem is, KState made adjustments at half and knew that we were going to be using those routes. He have nobody that will outrun their Dbacks as you never saw any of our WR's get any separation, even on the deep routes. They knew they could cover those and sag into soft short zone coverages. We didn't take advantage of our Aubrey/Green height advantages down the seams and we were too predictable the second half, both in the running game and passing game.
I just credit Chris for making the proper throws down the stetch and the coaches making the proper adjustments at the right time.
Happy with the win , excited about the comeback , great finish but we will
not win 1/2 of our conferrence games with an offense that plays like this.
We won't win many games scoring only 17 pts. The offense owes the
defense dinner!!!! The offense needs to start playing with the same
desire that Antwyne Zanders and some of the defensive players compete
with. I think that possibly with the exception of Tenn. Tech K. State
may not win another game this season.Thomas a good back but there
are backs in the Sunbelt I feel are just as good. Their qbks not as good
as Southern's. Thought crowd larger than announced. Sure seemed
louder than for Southern game.
