Wet weather can't keep UL from new attendance record

    The rest of the story

The number should have been higher. I realize that the weather folks had been calling for monsoon conditions all week but it was pretty obvious as the day went on that it was going to be no worse than it had been on Friday with a steady drizzle. As it was it didn't even amount to that. And even if it had been wrose the fans still need to show up.

To all those who run the line about not getting excited about conference foes and stating they would show up for a "name" opponent, well here it was and you failed to walk the walk. So the next time any of you call the radio and run that line I sure hope the hosts whether it be Jay, Bitter or any of the other KPEL guys ask if you were there for K-State. Because if you weren't then you need to shut up.

Agree. The weather all day Saturday was light. It looked early that was what it was going to be. We had 16,000 plus and should have been a lot more considering the day turned out better than we thought.

Overall , that crowd that was there made a lot of noise.

When we said last week it will be a sellout, get your tickets early ,it happended. This week the weather people were predicting gloomy weather, and people listened. Maybe we can tell the weather people to predict but still encourage people to come with your raincoat. We live in south La. and this is to be expected.

I am very happy this am and the weather outside right now looks much worse than on Saturday.

On to lsu and lets start saying we will beat them.

I thought it was a bad article proclaiming a 2 game attendance record when only 16,000 showed up v. K State. The whole week was negative with bad weather expected and hope for a decent crowd, etc. The paper should be calling out our fans for not showing up. There is NO REASON for UL not to fill the stadium every game. 30,000 is not unrealistic. We got 42,000 vs. a 1AA school in Southern. Take away their 12,000 and we had 30,000 there. How does a game v. Southern carry more interest than K State? I just don't get it. And, I don't care if Southern is just down the road. So is Nichols and Northwestern State. Heck, even Tulane didn't fill the stadium.

Agreed. But understand that Southern brought more than 12k. Also, you will not see the DA calling out the same people who purchase their newspapers. It's not their place to do so. I think that game is just a product of poor circumstances. I think you would have seen 25k against KSU minimum had the weather cooperated.

I agree. And, the forecast was calling for Thundershowers. I'm sure that some people (without parking passes) didn't like the idea of parking half a mile down the road during a thunderstorm, sitting out in the rain durning a thunderstorm, then walking half a mile back to their car in a thunderstorm. You and I will do it, but a heck of a lot of people will not. No one knew before the game that the rain would slack off in the first quarter. You're right, it was very poor circumstances.

zephyr: I did not write about the crowd Saturday because the poor attendance was not announced until late in the third quarter. Not enough time to write about that and do a game story and a notebook given deadline. It doesn't help that media representatives have to move from the press box to the work room during the final six minutes of the fourth quarter. There just wasn't enough time.

You might have missed it, but I called out the fan base last Wednesday in a column saying that there are really no excuses to not show up for the Kansas State game. A link to that column is listed below.

Don't complain about how many attended Saturday night. Went on one of lswho forums. Guess what they are complaining about the same thing last Saturday. Empty seats due to the rain.

Be glad that we had 16 plus in the rain. We keep winning the numbers will go up.

This was the largest rain day crowd in UL history.

You are right! You don't get it! Nichols, Northwestern, and Tulane do not have the large traveling fanbase that Southern has. Few schools in the South, large or small, can compare to Southern's traveling fanbase. No fewer than 18,000 of the 41,000 fans present were from Southern. When you add those present just to see the band, the scale just might tip in Southern's favor. Other than LSU, Tulane's largest home crowd was a game against southern. Northwestern's five biggest attended home games were games against Southern. Nichols largest home attnedance were for games against Southern. And the beat goes on......Hopefully now, you can see clearly the story that is unfolding. And hopefully you can get it!

Sounds like your saying alot of Southern fans have nothing better to do than travel around louisiana to watch their team lose.
