In Albany, passing was the theme of the night as quarterbacks and receivers from both the Panthers (2-0) and the Lafayette Wildcatters (0-2) had record breaking nights. Lafayette wide receiver Clyde Edwards tied an individual record for receptions in ...
Earning nods but falling short on the defensive side was Lafayette Wildcatters defensive back Clarence Pendleton and Swashbucklers linebacker Ellis Mead. Pendleton also collected two interceptions as well as returning one for a touchdown.
The Lafayette Wildcatters wrap up a two game Georgia road trip this Saturday when they take on the Columbus Lions at 6:30 cst at the Columbus Civic Center.
The Wildcatters will have their work cut out for them as Columbus leads the SIFL in both scoring offense, 74 points per game, and scoring defense, 32.7 points per game. The Lions are also number one in the SIFL in turnover margin at plus eleven after three games.
The high scoring Lion offense will be directed by former United States Naval Academy quarterback Chris McCoy. McCoy took over the starting job when quarterback Todd Spitzer got injured in an opening week victory over the Louisiana Swashbucklers. McCoy has proven very accurate since taking over the reins, completing 24 of 32 passes for 320 yards and seven touchdowns. Leading the Lions receiving core is Tirone Morris who has 18 catches for 269 yards and 2 touchdowns. Gerald Gales only has 14 catches on the year but 7 have gone for touchdowns.
Defensively the Lions are lead by linebacker Ryan Babb, from Troy University, who has touchdown returns of fifty yards and ten yards.
The Wildcatters are lead by quarterback Bo Bartik who last week had a big second half, 18 of 31, 4 touchdowns, in the Wildcatters loss to the Albany Panthers. For the game Bartik was 25 of 48 for 246 yards and 6 touchdowns. Coach Skip Foster said, “The Wildcatters will have to be prepared for the Lions blitz schemes. Linebacker Justen Rivers stacks right behind the nose guard and tries to shoot either A gap.” Coach Foster went on to say “We are going to have to do a good job of mixing up our protections to protect Bo.” Leading receivers on the season for the Wildcatters are Clyde Edwards who has 13 catches for 171 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Clarence Cotton who has 10 catches for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Wildcatters have the number one kickoff returner in the SIFL in Andre Kelly who has 224 yards in kickoff returns and one touchdown.
The Wildcatters make their home debut on Saturday, May 1, 2010, versus the defending SIFL Champions the Louisiana Swashbucklers. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with The Bag of Donuts band playing one hour before the game and one hour after the game.

Playing on the road is tough in any league, and the Southern Indoor Football League is proving no different in 2010 with the home team 10 – 0 on the season. The Lafayette Wildcatters (0-3) are hoping to continue this trend as they take on defending SIFL Champion the Louisiana Swashbucklers (2-2). Even though the season is only one third complete, this game takes on added significance for both teams. The Wildcatters desperately need a win, and the Swashbucklers have played all five SIFL Championship games in Lake Charles. With the Albany Panthers (3-0) and Columbus Lions (3-1) threatening to run away with the top two positions in the standings, a home field playoff game may be out of the question for the rest of the league.
Adding even more intrigue to this game is the presence of two former UL players who want to make their homecoming a winning one. Wide receiver Marcus Wildridge leads the Swashbucklers in receiving at 106.5 yards per game and Raymond Harris leads the league in all purpose yards at 178.5 per game. Wildcatter defensive backs Jasper O’Quinn and Clarence Pendleton will have their hands full all night as the Swashbucklers throw deep 85% of the time. Defensive backs coach Wendell Davis said, “we are going to have to do a good job of mixing up our coverage’s and we can’t give up the deep touchdown pass.”
Wildcatter head coach Skip Foster added, “This is our biggest rival, we are separated by 60 miles and we know they are coming here with every intention of spoiling our home opener. The Swashbucklers have been the number one team in this league since its inception, and we have to defend our home field.”
Fans are encouraged to get to the Cajundome early, doors open at 6:15 p.m., and to watch for flying footballs as team President, Ray Ronquillo, has gained approval from the league to allow members of either team after scoring a touchdown to throw the ball in the stands. Bag of Donuts band will perform from 6:30 until kickoff, at halftime, and after the game, and New Orleans Saints Hall of Famer Ricky Jackson will be available after the game to sign autographs.
