It's almost impossible to win a basketball game when you turn the ball over 25 times. This team is clearly more talented and deep than any other team we've had in the last 10 years. I hope they can learn to settle down a bit and make smarter plays.
That was brutal to watch last night.
1. Too many turnovers
2. Didn't see many clean offensive sets
3. We lack guards with ball handling abilities
4. A lot of newcomers, not gelling yet
5. Shawn pressed too much in the beginning-he looked like a freshman in 1st half
This team will get better. Rimmer needs to get more shots up from the outside along with Shepard. The ball must go through Long's hands every time down with him either making a hard move and getting to the line or kicking out to an open shooter. Defensively we will be better, we just looked like a team with a bunch of new guys playing a pick up game for the first time. Tough start to the season....As Crazy said, you can't justify anything by saying that we will improve week to week in this league. Your shot is now..winning as many OOC games as possible or we'll end up needing to do what we did last year.
We need to figure out a way to use Devonta's athleticism that doesn't involve him handling the ball.
You learn to not walk in biddy ball....
Turnovers were definitely disappointing. Coach Marlin said as much in his post game comments. He sounded very frustrated as taking care of the ball had been a point of emphasis in practice. However some of the moving picks and charging calls in the 2nd half were very questionable. Those are considered turnovers, just like a traveling violation or throwing the ball out of bounds is. I will say there were not as many of those in the first half when sloppy play led to the 11 point deficit. It is not uncommon when a team makes a run, they expend so much energy in doing so they cannot sustain it. That happened last night. Moving forward I expect to see Abbeville walkon Tiremone Williams at the point more, perhaps even starting. He did well in that role last night and seemed to settle the team down. In fact we shot 50% in the 2nd half. Just need to play with more efficiency from the beginning to have success. That will be critical on Friday at Auburn as Bruce Pearl is their coach and he will have his guys press relentlessly as he did while at Tennessee.
I agree. The traveling calls were bs. Twice I saw a guy on Tulsa slide his feet while trying to stop his momentum, and nothing was called. Of the 5 or 6 traveling calls, I recall one being an actual travel, while the others left me scratching my head. This is what infuriates me about basketball. Officials play a role in all sports, but they control so much more of the outcome in basketball than any other sport, and it's frustrating to watch. That said, we played poorly, but so did they. The difference in my opinion was the officiating. Neither team deserved to win that game IMO
Most university team jerseys usually have the team moniker (Ragin Cajuns) and away jerseys have the team name (Louisiana). That we have Ragin Cajuns on our away jersey does not bode well for Louisiana at home. It seems like the trend now is to get away from Louisiana. Football unis vs ULM had RC. Basketball has RC. Softball almost always has RC. Have you seen a coach with a Louisiana shirt this year? Everything Hud wears says RC. Appears he is tired of fighting a name battle the university doesn't support. Even the SID office now emphasizes RC over Louisiana. Very disheartening to see.
