I request that this thread be eliminated, Turbine. We can start up a UL band discussion on some other thread, but I find it disappointing how this went from being complimentary of Southern's band (justifiably so) to throttling and defending everything about the PoA.

I think the essential takeaways from any UL band, football game discussion should simply be how and what it will take to assist the band in growing in size (without a loss in ability). I also think it should steer toward the band members and band director finding ways to entertain and create atmosphere with stand tunes.

The band did a lot better in the stands last night. They looked and sounded like they were really interested that people are watching and listening to how they look and sound like during a game. They definitely... still... need to work on their selections of music.

I see great improvement in the halftime show as compared to the past several years. The key is to get many more horns on the field. And, the band director needs to fully understand... you are not Santa Clara Vanguard or Phantom Regiment... and half baked versions aren't that great. Those groups sound great and loud because they have the numbers and high caliber horns. You have to compensate somehow. You are not getting style points for intonation during a football game halftime. If it has taken you this long to know where you are on Saturday night... and who is in front of you... besides the 2 to 5% old band geeks in the stands... then you need your head examined. You are being highly inconsiderate toward "UL". Volume my man, volume. Cut half the finesse and elevate the volume. You will gain 40% more listeners in the stands that may not say you are great... but they stand a chance of leaving saying "hey, the band sounded loud tonight"... might actually end up being the most important compliment to your future growth that you ever missed in music education classes. Just trust me.

I found this and thought I would share it as well, no marching, no football, but truly emotional... obviously impromptu, but an AWESOME performance by a band in a parking lot wearing swim trunks and flipflops LOL!!! This sort of made the counter point of some of our band members, excellence in musical content is amazing and can be emotional as well... this proved the point to me, I freakin loved it.

That's a drum corps, i.e. professionals. It's not impromptu per se, drum corps tour the country, and a lot of times have practices at high schools and in parking lots. When Drums Across Cajun Field comes around again next year, they'll be a a lot of the drum corps staying at our local high schools. I know the Cavaliers stayed at Acadiana back when I was going to school there. I know a lot of them stayed around here around the last DCI show.

They're practices are open to the public most of the time. You can go watch them practice and they look exactly like that when they do.

If you do a you tube search for Carolina Crown there will be some brass warm ups for them too. They are good, really really really good.
