Best dang halftime show by a band, EVER!!!

Uh, no, you're stating opinion. Cajunbander is making observations about the Southern performance, which, if you go back and review the actual show, are probably accurate.

The observations made about the POA are basically this: "I don't like their style of show." Nothing based in fact. Only opinion.

The "hate" being visited on this board is toward the POA. Basically, this thread is about why the POA can't be as good as, or just like, the Southern band. Apples and oranges. And don't get angry with the band people and imply they are snobs when they point out the difference.

But the thread actually boils down to this: UL "fans" looking from someone else to blame for the death knell that falls over Cajun Field with the opening kick of a football game or at the Cajundome with the opening tap of a basketball game.

Baseball/softball get passes - they have actual fans who realize that watching their chosen team is a contact sport.

Exactly, It's totally different. The SU band is stuck in the 60's. They would not come close to placing at Louisiana Showcase for HIGH SCHOOL marching bands. Unfortunately, people that do not follow marching bands are clueless to what are the current trends. This as freely admitted by Zephyr in a previous post by him.

If it was all about going to a football game to be entertained, then if the Cajuns go 0-12 but the games are close and entertaining then it would be OK with everybody on this board. It's all about competition and trying to progress and move forward. In football and band.

There isn't a sane soul on earth that doesn't enjoy a throwback. You act like you listen to the SU band every week. Not to change the subject but what throwback uniform will UL be wearing at Nebraska?

UL's first band EVER was a Military Marching Band led by professor Sontag. Some claimed his aunt was the #2 Opera singer in the world.

Alvin Batiste (November 7, 1932 – May 6, 2007) was an avant garde jazz clarinetist born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He taught at his own jazz institute at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

He recorded with Cannonball Adderley. His most recent CD is with Branford Marsalis and other notable jazz musicians. Several well-known musicians studied under Batiste while at Southern University. They include Marsalis, Randy Jackson (American Idol), his brother Herman, Donald Harrison, Henry Butler, Charlie Singleton (Cameo), and Woodie Douglas (Spirit).
His CDs include "Late", released in 1993 and "Bayou Magic", released in 1996.

Actually...a performance is all about the audience's perception, not how the performance would be judged by a panel of band aficionados. Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn what the Louisiana Showcase thinks, the crowd is the judge at a college football game.

Its wonderful to go compete in competitions, a great source of pride I am sure, but a college football game is let your dang hair down time, and boogie!!!

_ Perfection?? It seemed like half the band had to break out of attention to keep fixing their shakos, watching the video (and being on the field when y'all played) nobody's feet were together. Blend, balance and tone quality weren't all there. It also seemed that a lot of people weren't playing a lot of the time. Fact is, y'all play loud and play pop songs. That's why people like you. We could play just as loud as y'all if we replaced some of the freakin' woodwinds with brass players. We also march correctly, and play all the time. Yet of course, nobody looks at that because most people aren't band people.




BTW, SU will never be on the cover of NCAA Football. _

Small minded people said similar things about Walter Payton, Doug Williams, Jerry Rice, Avery Johnson, Ricky Weeks....you get where I'm going with this.

Not sure I understand your point, but "opinions" are being stated as fact, facts which have no valid basis.

Our opinions differ in that we have different tastes in what types of shows we enjoy. Some of us appear to enjoy a drum corps format, others tend to enjoy the Southern-style. We can agree these are opinions. But people are basing an opinion on the issue they don't like the POA style of show, saying it sucks, and maintaining that is a fact.

Yet when someone pointed out issues with the actual performance of the Southern show, regardless of the type of show, they were deemed haters and snobs. If you go back and look at the Southern show, you will find very simplistic marching accompanied by really loud, contemporary music.

However your point about EVERYBODY coming up short is valid and is the absolute issue. I am a firm believer, that if I cheer for you, you'll score or stop the other guy from scoring. And if that doesn't happen, I have to cheer louder.

Here, it seems as if UL teams have to prove themselves each and every play, much less each and every game, to gain the support of the fans.

And yes, I have been disappointed in the band in the past. Basketball games during the semester break where the National Anthem has to be piped in. No fight song after a score. But I've also had issues when the Daily Advertiser didn't have a boxscore in the Sunday paper after the Saturday night game in Lafayette.

I guess I'm just disappointed in that even though the Cajuns won an incredibly huge game (don't care if it was against playoff series team) it was important because we couldn't take another McNeese loss. We still managed to _____ and moan about some thing(s):

we don't like the band's style of music and we didn't get to buy beer.

Answer: Winning the national title AND still getting to fire the head coach.

Outstanding post! I couldn't agree more. UL's fan base as a whole has not yet learned how to create TRUE home field/court advantage. Today I watched games played at Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio State. The CROWD is the home field advantage.

Michigan, Navy, Va Tech and Ok St all piped in music over the PA today. I don't see why some here complain as if we are the only ones, or that it reflects poorly on our band.

Are you serious? Majority of Cajuns fans do not want a SWAC style band. They do want a band that adds to the game time atmosphere and the PoA just doesn't cut it. If they did then music would not be piped in over the loud speakers.

Cajun fans want a band like Troy's. The PoA has talented musicians, no doubt, but the configuration of the PoA is set up more for a dental visit than a football game.

Also, I am no Fan of LSU, ULM, Tech, McNeese, Tulane, Nicholls or any other damn school within the state lines of Louisiana period. I support UL only! I am also of the opinion that it is not LSU or any other state entity holding us down. All of our shortcoming as a university are our own doings. UL has the power and resources to accomplish everything it wants in all aspects of university life. So monkee you can keep defending the soft tones of the PoA all you want and tell everyone who dislikes their style, that they are not a true fan, but sir the tones in your post tell everyone here that you pull for another university outside of UL.
