Thread: McGuire shows more durability

  1. Default McGuire shows more durability

After having trouble closing out games last season because of injuries sustained during them, UL sophomore running back Elijah McGuire packed on some pounds in the offseason.

It wasn't the 30 or so his coach might have exaggerated about in the preseason.

I sure hope we do not over utilize McGuire with Harris playing limited snaps. I love seeing McGuire on the field and love seeing him get more touches but I just hope he does not get worn down. McGuire with fresh legs is just as good as any RB in the country in my opinion.

I was a huge fan of him returning punts early in the season, but the fact that he will be carrying the ball more and punt returns have been sub par..I would hope we find someone else to return punts.

We don't block well enough on special teams (and sun belt punters aren't great) to have McGuire return punts. All he does most of the time is fair catch. Put someone else back there to do that and save him for the carries.

Agreed! I would like to see Al Riles returning punts.

McGuire almost broke one last week! Unfortunately Harris fumbled shortly after. Anyways I agree that they need to put someone else back there unless coach hud feels the need to change the momentum and have Elijah return one. There is no need to have Elijah out there in punt block situations in my opinion

I'd like to see Riles, Fuse or Scott back there. McGuire is too valuable at this point for the occasional possibility of a big return. Imagine our record right now without him. Yikes.

I'd like to see better blocking for punt returns. Wonder what the percentage is of fair catches by McGuire. He hasn't actually run that many punts back and I can think of only 2 that were returned longer than 10-15 yds. We haven't had a PR over 15 yds that I can think of this year and no one has had a KO past the 40 yd line that I remember.

I agree to an extent with what you said; but SBC punters are actually VERY good this year. 5 of them are on the Ray Guy watch list.
