The Bill Bass Open golf tournament is held annually on the Friday of UL's Homecoming week, with this year's tournament scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23, at Acadian Hills Country Club.
The tournament is open to all golfers and all Ragin' Cajun fans, and raises money for both the UL Alumni Association and the Ragin' Cajun golf team. All proceeds from the event go to those two groups, and entries are limited to the first 144 golfers to sign up so players are encouraged to enter well in advance.
The tournament is in honor of Bill Bass, who served as UL's first full-time alumni director from 1965-78 and also served two terms as the Cajuns' golf coach. His name is synonymous with golf in Acadiana, and he was one of the spearheads in the development of both Oakbourne Country Club and Acadian Hills. After his passing in 1987 the Alumni Association began a scholarship fund in his honor, and later the Association and his son Bob Bass -- himself golf coach at UL for nearly two decades -- founded the event that is one of the highlights of Homecoming.
The tournament begins at noon with registration and lunch beginning at 11 a.m. Entry forms are available at all area golf courses and golf outlets as well as at the Alumni Association, and an entry form is available here at raginpagin.com as well as the university's official athletic site, www.ragincajuns.com, and Acadian Hills' site, www.acadianhills.com.
