Southwestern Louisiana Is Going Independent
Southwestern Louisiana, after 11 years as a member, today withdrew from the Southland Conference during a meeting at Arkansas State.
Ray Authement, the Southwestern Louisiana president, said the school will participate in Division I-A football as an independent because it could not adhere to a 75-scholarship limit imposed on Division I-AA schools by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The remaining Southland members - Arkansas State, McNeese State, Louisiana Tech, Texas-Arlington and Lamar - were dropped to Division I-AA. Division I-A has a 95-scholarship limit.
