So are they saying we can't even beat ourselves?
I like how every article i've read prior to this one is how deep our recievers are, how we have two capable starters battling it out, we have the best O-line in the conference, we have a stable of running backs.............but we have no offense. I'm confused. Which is it? Is this all stemming from on saturday morning scrimmage? I wasn't there last saturday but I was there 2 weeks ago and the Offense didn't look that bad. The Defense looks really good.
I'm sure it is somewhere in the middle. The offense is probably not as bad as it looked on Saturday because truly, it couldn't be. They did not look like D-1 athletes this weekend and I hope they improve tremendously in 10 days. Coach Bustle said the O-Line played better than he originally thought and the running backs are the one's who missed holes and reads. Well, maybe that was the case but the O-Line had no push and the holes they did open up weren't very big.
The QB play was ugly. That's really the only word I can use to describe it. McGuire's stat line is much better than Masson's but don't let that fool you. He played poorly as well. They made terrible reads all scrimmage and just looked out of rhythm. The receivers didn't help them either. Marlin Miller had some drops along with Green and Lee. Lawson really impressed me. He is a good size and ran great routes and caught everything thrown to him.
So much for altering the offense a bit and running from under center more. This is not happening even though the coaching staff claimed this was going to be a bigger emphasis going into this year. I believe this is also a reason why the running game will be limited as we do not have the same personnel running the zone option read as before. At least we incorporated the zone triple option which is not a bad touch to get an additional RB in there.
The defense did look good and that is for sure. It sounds like they've been pretty consistent all through the spring and fall. The D-line looks much more improved and they are going to put more pressure on the QB this year which is required for success. They also have a lot of depth even with Nate out. I was extremely happy with Gaddies. He impressed me with his athleticism and ability to get to the QB.
i cant argue with the turnovers and rushing avg. but the sacks are very off. All a defender has to do is touch the qb and its a sack. In a real game more than half would not be sacks b/c we dont play touch football. Which also kind of messes up the running avg. b/c the qb's cant scramble.
Well, I can tell you that the sacks that were earned this saturday, none of the QB's would have escaped it and if they had gotten rid of the ball, there is a good chance something bad would have come from it. If the defender is touching the QB in the pocket, then there 's a good chance he's going down.
well i was at the scrimmage, and there is no way of knowing that b/c as soon as a hand hits the jersey the whistle is blown. Also, if a QB knows he cant be hit he will sit in the pocket a little longer when he normally would have taken off running. Last year during this time our defense appeared to somewhat contain desormeaux, which everyone knows would never happen in live action. the numbers are not very accurate, its alot different for both sides when they know the QB cannot be hit. When our Qb's did take off running as soona s anyone touched them they were down. its not a real situation. You know how many times a defender touches the sleeve of a Qb in the pocket but he still steps up and makes a throw or takes off? Huge differnece between touching the arm of a QB and recording a sack in a game situation.
Well, I was there also and everytime a sack was called, the defender was pretty much in position to lay out the QB if it would have been a real situation. I'm not saying there's some room for the QB to get out in a few of those situations but all in all, the DL got to the QB and would at the very least have disrupted throws, caused a T.O. etc....
