  1. UL Football Beer at the swamp.Looks like we win!

This should make the season interesting.

“UL athletics now has a contract with a professional concessionaire firm that has the experience, personnel and training to ensure that all state laws and safety issues concerning the sale of alcohol will be followed,” university athletic director David Walker said in a statement.

I really don't care what someone outside of us thinks about beer drinking at a Cajun football game. I'm not pushing beer or drinking. but Acadiana has always mixed beer drinking with natural social and cultural gatherings. It isn't a new toy to act like a 3 year old about. In many other parts of the country, and even in parts of the south, people act insane with a little beer in them. I can see why most areas of the country, and especially the huge state schools, ought not allow it.

At monster programs. dare I say it. they are magnets for the dregs of society. Dregs usually act like a-holes before they start drinking. once the drinking starts. it's a catalyst for massive a-hole behavior. UL does not attract the tank-top dreg fan. That type of person requires an affiliation with the largest institutionalized mega-something to feel important about themselves.

We sell beer at the Cajundome and I've never seen any incident related to beer drinking. It makes a big difference if your immediate public is used to eating and drinking in non-volatile social gatherings. and Acadiana is pretty used to it. UL is a special situation where beer drinking isn't going to amplify bad behavior. alcohol consumption is already going on. so why not make some money for the program with it?

Well, here's my two cents on the situation. Personally, I think it's a great deal for UL for two reasons: 1) It should help generate some much needed additional revenue 2) It will hopefully discourage people from leaving the game to booze in the parking lot. I also agree that this isn't for everybody. From what I've heard, the SEC has an unwritten rule prohibiting the sale of alcohol (with the exception of the suites). I've been to 9 of the 12 SEC venues, and I agree they shouldn't sell alcohol. First of all, most of the SEC stadiums boast a capacity of 70,000+ which is obviosly harder to control than 30,000. Second of all, there is usually a significant mix of fans. For instance, schools like Bama, Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, etc. will bring close to 10,000 fans when playing in Baton Rouge. You can usually cut the tension with a knife at the marquee SEC games, and selling alcohol would probably only add fuel to the fire. Again, just my opinion and I'm sure someone else could make a compelling arguement for selling it.

Louisiana-Lafayette Embraces America, Freedom and Beer
    Friday, August 21, 2009

Louisiana-Lafayette just struck a blow for apple pie, credit card debt, overwhelming firepower and all other things redolent of America. The Ragin' Cajuns will roll back the unsanctioned college football ban on selling alcohol in the stands and let those of legal age consume beer at their football games. That tingly feeling you have? It's freedom, and UL-Lafayette just made a little bit more of it for you.

The university joins Southern University in debuting beer sales in the stands this year, both because it's a way to get extra revenue, and because there's no rule saying they can't makes a buck off selling alcohol legally. In fact, there's no rule saying you couldn't sell 24 oz Fuzzy Navels in little footballs to squealing 21-year-old sorority sisters all day, only an informal agreement between schools and in conferences saying they won't. The only other schools who will let you tipple in the stands are Tulane and Miami, teams that play their games in pro stadiums, and who are therefore not bound by pesky university rules regarding sale of alcohol by university institutions.

Now, there are a thousand different university regulations regarding the sale of alcohol in campus buildings, but they could be swept away with a few determined swipes of a university president's pen. Better that things remain the way they are in college football, though. Let's keep the game as sober and clean as it's always been, protect innocent young fans from demon rum, and insure that sassy young lads and lasses enjoy the fresh air and excitement of a football game without the intrusion of poisonous alcohol. All the intoxication they need is right there in the stadium, after all!

    • As if the Cajuns weren't ragin' enough. Minnesota fans will not be drinking at the Gophers' new on-campus stadium this fall, and subsequently may stay home altogether. Such on-campus alcohol bans are standard procedure across the country -- except, now, at Louisiana-Lafayette, which as of this fall has officially had enough of your "sobriety":

Beer is not allowed inside most college football stadiums, but the University of Louisiana at Lafayette will become the second school in the state to allow drinking in the general seating areas.
    [.]
The university's athletic director, David Walker, issued a statement on the decision. "Athletics now has a contract with a professional concessionaire firm that has the experience, personnel, and training to ensure that all state laws and safety issues concerning the sale of alcohol will be followed."

Of course, in Louisiana, "safety issues" means restricting yourself to only one DUI per night, a bar most Cajuns learned to clear ages ago. If anyone can handle watered-down Michelob responsibly, it's the upstanding, tolerant folk of Arcadia.

Ill hold off if you do.

Like I said before, there should be rules and there will be. We aren't idiots, even though I still "act" like one some times. The first time I show my ass at a Cajun sporting event will, be my last time.

I PROMISE IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! Yet I can only speak for me and my family and friends. That includes you RC70, no crawfish macaroni for you!

LOL dont hate, we need something in our new tailgate spot. I think we will be ok, most acadians can hold there liquor and I think the ones who cant should be escorted out of the game. I have always loved that football games were a family event and not a social outing.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm going to enjoy some field foam at the swamp. I'm all for it. I can just hear it now. You must realize, whenever something new is added to the Cajun sporting experience, there will be someone to complain about it. We are Cajun fans after all. ;-)

I wonder if the actual Cajuns from Canada complained as much as Cajun fans.

People who drink beer at the cajundome haven't been drinking for the past 8-10 hours in the heat prior to drinking their warm draft at the game. Football games are always rowdier than any other sport and it along with boozing always leads to improper behavior.

I'm obviously in the minority here, and who knows how this will turn out, but I wish that this was a threshold the university had not crossed. The potential for problems and tragedies will certainly be increased. I'm not a prude, and yes I drink, but drunk is drunk.
I doubt that local behavior patterns are much different here or in Minnesota where booze is concerned. Hope the need for revenue hasn't trumped reponsibility and good sense. Our wonderful local culture has a dark side that encourages alcohol as a necessary part of every social event. Beer in the stadium is sure to be a party to that.
