Day 5

The Cajuns faced the threat of lightning during practice again on Tuesday, forcing the team to take shelter inside the Leon Moncla Indoor Practice Facility. Practice was completed in full, marking the first day in full pads for the team.

UL moved inside after completing just a few periods of individual work outside. Once inside, the hitting really picked-up with the most physical session the players will see at any time - middle drill.

The defense swarmed the running backs during middle drill, although the offense was able to gain big yards on quarterback keepers.

"Going out in full pads brought another level of excitement out to practice," Cajuns linebackers coach Tim Rebowe said. "The guys were looking forward to today's practice."

Middle drill was followed by a blitz drill and then two pass skeleton periods. Practice concluded with two varsity periods that were run full speed.

"Middle drill was live at full speed," Rebowe added. "We practiced smart today, putting the guys in situations where each side could have success."

The first varsity period was a run-play action drill that saw the defense control the play. The teams then competed in 12 snaps of third down plays.

"We emphasized some defensive packages that we are using on third down," Rebowe stated. "The offense made a few plays, but we responded by getting some stops."

On the second play, a third-and-eight, Chris Masson connected with Louis Lee on a long pass down the right side over the defense. Masson then hit tight end Ladarius Green for 10 yards on third-and-six. A penalty on the defense two plays later preceded a 20-yard pass from Brad McGuire to Marlin Miller.

The offense started four-of-six on third down, until the defense held for the next five plays. The session ended with terrific pass by Brady Thomas, while rolling to his left, hit Javone Lawson with a bullet to get the first down.

The Cajuns continue to practice at 3:30pm the rest of the week leading up to the first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday.
