Thread: Walk-on continues family legacy at UL

  1. UL Football Walk-on continues family legacy at UL

After graduating from St. Thomas More last spring, Will Stevenson decided to enroll at UL.

The move should come as no surprise. In a way, it’s a family tradition.

Stevenson, a walk-on for the football team, represents the fifth generation of his family to attend the school. His great-great-great grandfather, William Stevenson, graduated from UL and taught physical education there. His great-great grandfather, grandfather and dad were also students at the school, he said.

Good luck to Will. He is a good kid and plays with a lot of heart.

  3. Default Re: Walk-on continues family legacy at UL

Forgotten fact: William F. Stevenson was an assistant coach on UL's undefeated 1943 football team.

In a 1943 preseason scrimmage he went head to head against another UL assistant coach, Steve Belicheck (Bill Belicheck's dad)

The football coaches in 1943 were

    Bill Stevenson ( UL )
Louie Whitman (head coach) ( Wyoming 1925-27 )
    Gust Zarnas ( Ohio State 1935-37 ) (NFL 1938-40 )
Steve Belicheck ( NFL Lions )

When he played Bill Stevenson was the anchor of the Line known as "Seven Oak Trees" and in 1938 he was named 2nd team All-SIAA (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association)

  4. Default Stevenson clarification

Will Stevenson, a walk-on linebacker for the football team and recent STM graduate, represents the fifth generation of his family to attend UL after enrolling in summer school.

His great-great grandfather, C.P. Motty, graduated from the school in 1908. His great grandfather, William F. Stevenson, lettered in football and track before graduating in 1939. He later taught physical education and was a football and tennis coach at the school.

Will’s grandfather, William F. Stevenson Jr., finished school in 1970. His father, William F. Stevenson III, graduated in 1988.

That puts Will, whose full name is William F. Stevenson IV, in line to be the fifth generation of his family to earn a degree from the school. Incorrect information was provided to The Daily Advertiser for a story about Stevenson in Tuesday’s print edition.
