Thread: Ragin' Cajuns have a QB Derby

  1. UL Football Ragin' Cajuns have a QB Derby

Of all the questions thrown in UL coach Rickey Bustle’s direction since the end of the 2008 football season, one has been asked more than any other.

There’s no doubt that the loss of running back Tyrell Fenroy, the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, leaves a big hole. But there is a bigger issue:

Which sophomore quarterback — Brad McGuire or Chris Masson — will now operate the Ragin’ Cajuns’ spread option attack with Michael Desormeaux, last year’s league Offensive Player of the Year, out of eligibility?

Sounds a little bit like how Jake got his opportunity to start in Carolina. Hope this guy can pull through for us.....

"According to McGuire, both he and Masson will benefit from the return of offensive coordinator Ron Hudson and quarterbacks coach Jorge Munoz. It marks the first time since the 2005 season that the team welcomes back the same offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from the previous season."

Jeez, this ought to help too!

This is a very good problem to have. Better to have 2 guys that can start instead of only 1 that you're not even sure should be starting.

Why should there not be competition? The coaches havent seen enough of these two leading the first team yet. That is what fall practice is for. You hardly get enough time/reps during the summer and fall is when the competition really happens. Its not solved because neither is better right now. I understand not wanting to go into it with a rotation and I think the coaches will avoid that (other than letting Gautier get a few reps due to his style), but for now we have competition. Competition is what makes us better (hopefully.)

Masson and McGuire are pretty even so far and eventually one will stand out and get the majority of reps, but thats what we are trying to figure out.

If they are that close after the fall camp then I think the O-line should be the ones to make the decision. LOL. They will be the ones blocking for the QB and the guy who can get the team to rally around him as the true "leader" will have more success regardless of talent.

Competion never hurt anyone. Now if we are still discussing this in Week 6 of the season, then it wont be good.

Correct. It should also be noted that you have this competition because of two factors. One, McGuire got hurt at the end of last year and required a minor surgical procedure which kept him out of most of the spring. This enabled Masson to get a ton of reps and to his credit, he worked hard and improved a ton and played really well in the spring forcing the coaches to allow them to compete for the job and I think it is very healthy to have them pushing each other to get better quickly. I welcome it. I'd rather there be a competition due to good play by both rather than one backing into it due to the poor play of the starter.

Well I saw today why---Gautier is the guy-----the things that he can do are amazing-----he just does all the things of Des and is faster and has a much better arm---give him the job now---oh yea but I remember the Ark. St. game and a leader beating a hell of a team!!!!
