Day 4
The Cajuns intensity picked-up dramatically in day number four. The second practice in shoulder pads created a stir among the players that lasted until the final snap of a very spirited practice.
"It was good to see the guys flying around the field," running backs coach Justin Lustig said. "As a coach, there is one thing that you don't want to have to coach and that is effort. We've been on the guys, pushing the ceiling, and they are working hard."
After seeing the defense get the upper hand during the team's last practice, the offense responded on Monday. The running game was a success in period six, a team run drill, and the receivers caught a few nice deep balls in the pass skeleton drill that followed.
"There's no question that the offense responded today," Lustig added. "We have a lot of competition out here and it's making everyone better. There is more than just competition between the offense and the defense, guys are competing within their position for starting jobs."
The final two periods saw the offense against the defense in live work without tackling. The offense dominated the first session, popping runs by Undrea Sails, Yobes Walker, Draylon Booker and a reverse by wide receiver Marlin Miller where he made three defenders miss. The passing game was also working as Chris Masson connected on deep balls to Pierre Hill and Louis Lee, while Keldric White hit Andrew Joseph with a long pass over the defense.
The last period saw the defense regain some momentum, stuffing the offense with a heavy blitz. Dwight Bentley garnered an interception, while the defense applied pressure on nearly every snap.
The Cajuns will practice in full pads on Tuesday and Thursday, opting for shorts and shoulder pads on Wednesday and Friday. The first scrimmage of the fall is slated for 9am on Saturday.
Inside the Indoor Facility: After practicing outside through four periods - approximately 45 minutes - the Cajuns moved inside the Leon Moncla Indoor Practice Facility due to the threat of lightning.
Roster Move: The Cajuns added Hammond native Matt Gore (St. Thomas Aquinas) to the roster on Monday afternoon...The six-foot, 265-pound deep snapper wore number 58 at practice.
