Thread: Notebook: Bustle happy with productive first week

  1. Default Notebook: Bustle happy with productive first week

With the opening week of fall camp complete, UL coach Rickey Bustle took some time following Saturday’s practice to reflect on his feelings after the first three practices.

The Ragin’ Cajuns spent the first two practices in helmets and shorts before adding shoulder pads (shells) on Saturday.

“What I liked was their effort and their focus,” Bustle said. “I don’t think we practiced as well as we could have yesterday (Friday), but that was the second day of a lot of installation. But I thought we came out today (Saturday) and got better.”

Thanks JP. I like the behind the scenes info regarding several of the players. Geez, Richardson at 270? Our D-line is going to be huge. If they can develop pass rush skills to rival their weight gain, we'll be deadly. Both DE's weighing over 260. I'm a little worried about Ladarius Green dropping so many balls. He needs to make sure he stays focused since he will be counted on so heavily this year. Too bad none of our RB's gained 10 or more pounds and how in the world does a player moving to FB which needs the extra weight gain go out and lose 10 pounds? That's crazy.

I wonder if some of the weights are accurate...not sure they were all updated correctly...

I wouldn't worry too much about Green. He's going to come around. I think everyone should be encouraged by Aubrey. He's playing like a man so far in fall camp.

As for the weights, I went with the numbers provided to me. Something might have been lost in translation, but if that's the case it was by mistake.

I understand the weightloss for guys like Gillis who have been injured and likely deconditioned quite a bit. Weight gain for Topp is great except we haven't seen him on the field yet as he's been injured since being here. I'm hoping they stay healthy in the fall camp so we can get an idea of what we're working with. Just curious but what is Fleming at about now. I talked to Daylon McCoy a while back and he said he was near 220 but figured he'd be playing close to 210 once season starts and his inability to keep the weight on due to the physical demands of the season. Sounds about right. JP, also I haven't heard anything about Jez Washington this entire offseason. How's he doing. He is never mentioned in the linebacker rotation or depth chart.

Fleming is up to 232. He's a beast. I expect a breakout year from him this season.

McCoy also looks good. He will probably be 220 once the year starts. You'd hope he can stay at 212-215 as the season carries on.

Washington is currently the No. 2 guy behind McCoy at the Will (weak side) linebacker spot. He's not getting as much attention largely because you've got Zanders, Fleming and McCoy coming back, not to mention Brooks, too.

I agree about Grant. A lot of people rightfully so are expecting big years from Zanders and McCoy but I think Fleming is the best and most versatile Defensive player we have. Until he got injured last year, he was on pace to get over 80 tackles and led the team in sacks and Int's! If he is healthy, he will be a monster on D this year.
