Talk about Jason Chery all you want but probably the fastest Cajun ever in any sport was Harold Porter and he wore # 31 in 1974 and 1975. Harold was an Olympic class sprinter on USL's track team coached by Bob Cole. At the time USL had one of the fastest 440 relay teams in the country anchored by Harold. He was clocked at 9.2. Augie Tammariello talked Harold into coming out for football (remember Bob Hayes form the Dallas Cowboys). Harold played wide receiver. One big play I rememeber was the 1974 homecoming game against Tennessee-Chattanooga when Harold caught a 99 yard touchdown pass. After he crossed the goal line, Harold kept running up the tunnel just like Forrest Gump. We won 21-20 that broke a 14 game losing streak. You have no idea what it is like to work as hard as you can for almost 2 years and finally win your first game as a collegiate athlete. Harold was signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs and made it to one of the final cuts.
One of Harold's great stories was the US team in China for a meet----too much Saki(sp) and the place was crazy-----What was a great idea was for Harold to run the first leg of the relay and let him by international rules have the longest time with the stick----came close twice to winning the National Championship 2 times----Btw another member of the relay team was Don Credeur who after Nam came back to school!!!! He played a few years of football also!!!! I think he was 32 at the time---well he was old!!!!
