One of the best players on the early 1970's team was David Neustrom a linebacker from Catholic High New Iberia. He wore #38. One of the nicest guys off the field but an absolute terror on the field. He was All-Southland Conference for several years and was one of the few outstanding players on some abysmal USL teams. He played his heart out every play regardless of the score. We played Memphis State in 1973 (the 0-10 year) and David must have had 20 tackles, caused a fumble and intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. Of course we lost, but David was a one man wrecking crew that Memphis could not block. On the Sunday night coaches show in Memphis, the Memphis coach told his audience that he had witnessed one of the best college football players he had seen and proceeded to show 30 minutes of David Neustom highlights. He had everyone's repect, not by what he said but by how he played the game. His intensity was unmatched. One of the funniest stories about Neus was before a game in 1974 he was asked by Augie Tammariello to say a prayer before the game, never being an eloquent statesman, Nuestrom stumbled through a few thank you Jesus' and then says "*** it, let's go kick their azz . . . ." When this guy had his game face on, you knew it.
I haven't added any but I enjoy the roster history.
