Thread: New-look linebackers a success

  1. Default New-look linebackers a success

Junior linebacker Dominique Tovell hadn't played inside linebacker since the mobile app Instagram was still in its infancy. That was his senior season at Columbia High School in 2010. Now in his fourth year as a college football player, Tovell had grown a...

I'm surprised this isn't one of the most discussed threads on here. It's football season, we've had 8000 posts on improvement requirements primarily on defense, with only a handful of cheerleader knuckleheads getting their panties in a wad over fans being critical, and many of us are seeing precisely what we've been asking for materialize on the football field. This is the absolute best thing that's happened to our football program since we made and won our first bowl game. This is it. This is where a newer, better Cajun program takes shape.

If you are a UL football fan, and not just a UL clothing, restaurant, brick fan... I sure hope you take stock in what's happening with our football team. We just broke through a major barrier. If you have any clue whatsoever about college football, you can be very comforted in knowing that regardless of how well we did in the past 3 years... we actually have a chance now of taking on better programs and competing. It may only be an early showing of promise to some. Quite to the contrary for those with vision beyond the obvious. This is HUGE.

You may be on to something, unfortunately. If we don't start having posters recognize when we've done things right... exceptionally right... and all we ever read is their habitual identification of our problems, then we may have a bit of an issue. You know I don't like muting criticism. But, I feel that if you're going to be hypercritical, you have to be the first to acknowledge the positives.

There could be many that don't recognize the significance of our football scheme adjustments and the extreme impact they'll have going forward. Some, I think, may only have enough football sense to tally it as "one or two games of evidence". Quite to the contrary. It is like watching an avalanche after a pebble tapped your shoulder, and saying, "I'll have to see the rest before I believe it's much more than a pebble.". It's huge... and it's awesome for our football program.

I'd like you to elaborate on these adjustments proving this staff can have success going forward, with regards to how important the abilities to evolve are.

I think the reason this thread hasn't taken off is because of the timing of the game. Personally, when games are on the weekend, I have a lot more time to be all in. With the game being on Tuesday, it was cram in the game and continue normal life at my house. Too many busy people under one roof who rely on me. At any rate, that's got something to do with it, I presume.

I was infamously critical of Mark Hudspeth for 3 weeks, so I'm obligated to give credit where it's due. I believe a telling sign in a truly gifted and successful coach is his ability to shift and evolve. Coaches that tailor their program to the personnel are the ones that usually come out on top, and Hud looks like he's grasping this principle. And I'm highly impressed by that, because for a moment there it seemed like he was going to be the stubborn type. Defensively, the huborus wasn't such that he couldn't admit the problem. That, in and off itself is a great sign for the program going forward. Sometimes leadership is knowing when to ask for other's opinions. Hats off to Coach Hud, James Willis and all that were involved. This team was ready to dominate Tx St.

I felt like our players were allowed to be themselves. They weren't slowed by over thinking. They played football. The reaction time difference was staggering.

Now, I also know it's one game.

Lets not put the cart before the horse. This defense has some big tests coming up that will show if they've really improved.

No one was "nay saying".. If your daughter comes home with a guy that has a spider tat on his face, chances are, you'll have some questions.. We were just asking questions..

It is one game, but to go from as bad as we were to what our defense did to a supposedly pretty good txstate offense is a big turnaround. I'm pretty sure if you looked at the stats, southern's offense was able to do more on us. As I stated in an earlier thread, the only reason txstate didn't have a goose egg on the scoreboard going into the 4th qtr was because cadona shanked a punt.

As long as we keep improving and don't go backwards we will be fine.

We were impressive, there is no doubt. But I'd say that was the most one deminsional team we've played in a long while. The passing game was never an option for Tx St. That was evident from the jump.

To be fair they led the league in passing TD's and our pressure on the QB had a lot to do with making them that way.
