In 1974 William "Happy" Hairston wore # 43. Happy was a 6'3' cornerback from Columbus, Ohio. For those at the 1974 Tulane game you might remember Happy as the guy who just missed blocking the winning field goal.
In 1975 and 1976 #43 was worn by Walt Slattery one of the JC players from Arizona. Walt started at slotback but was later moved to tight end. Walt was from Valentine Nebraska and originally signed with Nebraska but went to a JC and then USL. Walt had the best hands of anyone I have ever seen. He went weeks without dropping a pass . . . I don't mean just in a game . . . I mean in practice, drills, skelton . . . anytime. If the ball was close Walt caught it.
