ERATH - There's no question that Judge Kaliste Saloom Jr. knows his French.
His family spoke the language at home. His wife majored in it while at Newcomb College. He was taught its nuances in school by Christian brothers and nuns.
But sometimes, even the best can slip up.
During a ceremony in Erath Saturday, Saloom recalled speaking in French to a group in Canada, explaining to them that he was a city judge. But for some reason, the group burst into laughter.
Saloom hadn't told them that he was a judge in a "low court." He had proclaimed himself as judge of a chicken yard.
