A whole team win tonight. Excellent job, to the players and coaches.
If you follow RaginCajunsAth on snapchat, they had a badass video of Elijah's nasty stop and touchdown and a great angle on Al Riles blowing that safety up. It sounded like a car crash.
Cajuns are simply built to dominate sunbelt teams that don't have very good QB and downfield passing game (as Ga State does). It's just the way that it is. But for whatever reason, other than the UF game two years ago, they just can't compete at the big time level, even with below average top 5 conference teams. It's ok though, program is building. It's likely going to be another NOLA Bowl this year.
We can certainly compete and beat "below average" top 5 conference teams. In fact, we can be competitive against the top 25. There is no doubt Hud designs this system around edging out SBC teams. He's yet to organize the program, especially in the early part of the year, around a gameplan that's designed to upset a giant. He prepares the team with the packages he intends them to become more and more familiar with, and then hammers home "execution" the entire year. And the defensive system we ran... sucked.
We've been conservative on both sides of the ball. And that does not lend itself towards competing against top programs... or even middle to low P5 teams.
However... I hope everyone realized that last night was a break away from Hud and staff's usual approach. This defense was obviously more successful against a middle tier SBC team... but it is also the solution against everyone we face in the future. Even the offense was more dynamic. Without a doubt, the criticisms of the first part of this year changed the attitude of our coaching staff.
This staff is in no way going to admit it. You can put that in the bank. But they changed their religion last night. To them, they "did football" what they intended to do. BS. They got off the pedestal, listen and learned, and implemented a different approach. Fortunately, they included Terrance in the plan as well. Terrance is now the biggest run threat QB in the SBC. And that is what he should have been from game 1 forward. He mostly threw on the hoof... exactly as he should... and "miraculously" targets starting appearing downfield.
So... I will agree with you that the Cajun football program of Hud's past... was unable to compete with the better programs. But right now... if Hud keeps up the initiative to make this team a dangerous program... we can "compete" with anyone. And when you actually play dangerous... you will eventually beat them. I've never been a "cheerleader". So, when I tell you that last night was way more than "beating a low level SBC team"... I mean it. We operated the program like we should have been operating from game 1... and it is going to work for us.
I don't anybody saw last night coming!!! WOW. Good win and that is the way we've hoped to see our defense play all year.
"Which one and which catch??? I said it early last year---He is the best player I have ever seen at UL in 50 years!!! "
Delhomme, Fenroy, Stokely, Mitchell????
